In 2015 Snam implemented IBM Maximo as its Enterprise Asset Management solution for the SNAM Rete Gas Enterprise Asset Manager program. The project period extended from December 2015 to May 2017 and involved Accenture S.p.A personnel in roles including Business and Functional Analyst, Technical Architect and Project Manager, aligning the initiative with the broader SNAM SmartGas renewal program.
IBM Maximo was configured to support core Enterprise Asset Management capabilities including asset lifecycle management, work order management, preventive maintenance planning and master data management. The implementation followed a structured sequence of business process analysis, business process design and re-engineering, and detailed requirement gathering to map Maximo configuration to operational workflows.
The technical architecture used RedHat over VMWare for virtualization, Oracle 12 as the database tier and Java based middleware, with SOAP used for service interfaces in the IBM Maximo environment. Project activities included feasibility studies, vertical and architectural integration, authoring specifications for vendors and managing solutions development to integrate Maximo into Snam’s enterprise stack.
Governance and rollout combined architectural consulting, master data governance and ITIL aligned process considerations, with coordination of a team of more than 10 people. Project leadership covered cost estimation, workforce planning, liaison with internal vendor and client stakeholders, and oversight of development and testing phases.

In 2020, Snam deployed an In-House Blockchain as a Blockchain Platform to test bilateral transactions for the purchase and sale of natural gas on the Italian Virtual Trading Point PSV. The pilot began on 17 December 2020 and involved two market participants, Axpo Italia and Sorgenia, representing the first instance of a network operator managing blockchain transactions in the gas sector globally.
The In-House Blockchain was built to provide an immutable distributed ledger, cryptographic data integrity and permissioned transaction records, combined with smart contract execution to enable machine-to-machine settlements and algorithmic trading workflows. Functional capabilities implemented during the experiment included transaction recording, counterparty permissioning, smart contract orchestration for bilateral trades, and visibility controls to preserve market confidentiality while improving transparency.
Snam developed and owns the blockchain-based platform in collaboration with the Italian startup Mangrovia, and it engaged Axpo Italia and Sorgenia to define requirements and execute test scenarios on the PSV trading hub. Operational scope remained focused on the Italian gas market and the PSV, with Snam operating node infrastructure and coordinating participant onboarding for the bilateral tests.
The experimentation continued through 2020 as part of Snam's digital transformation and its SnamTec investment program, with the stated aims of exploiting immutability, security and transparency inherent to Distributed Ledger technologies. Snam positioned the In-House Blockchain Blockchain Platform to potentially support future use cases such as tracking renewable gases and automating energy source provenance, while governance emphasized Snam ownership, controlled participant access and phased testing with market counterparties.
