| SAP | Legacy | SAP HCM (HR) | Core HR | HCM | Sparta Consulting | 2010 | 2011 |
In 2010 VSP Vision Care implemented SAP HCM (HR) as its Core HR application to consolidate human resources administration across its insurance operations in the United States, supporting approximately 14,000 employees. The SAP HCM (HR) deployment established a central personnel record and HR transaction hub aligned with Core HR functional requirements for workforce data consistency and HR process standardization.
Configuration work focused on core personnel administration and organizational management, with category-aligned functionality implemented for workforce administration, time and attendance tracking, and benefits-related HR processes consistent with a Core HR rollout. SAP HCM (HR) was configured to support employee master data lifecycle events, approval workflows, and role-based access for HR and people managers.
Sparta Consulting served as the implementation partner, leading configuration, testing, cutover planning, and knowledge transfer activities. The program organized governance with HR and IT stakeholders to operationalize SAP HCM (HR) as the single source of truth for employee information, and to transition ongoing support and process ownership to VSP HR and IT teams.
Post-implementation activities emphasized stabilization, end-user training, and documented HR process workflows to embed SAP HCM (HR) into VSP’s HR operating model. The deployment reflected a standard Core HR implementation approach for a large insurer, centralizing employee records and standard HR transactional processing under SAP HCM (HR).

| PokitDok | Legacy | PokitDok Dokchain | Blockchain Platform | Blockchain | n/a | 2018 | 2018 |
In 2018, VSP Vision Care announced an investment in PokitDok and began collaboration to explore PokitDok Dokchain, a Blockchain Platform that meets HIPAA requirements. The initial engagement was channeled through VSP's innovation lab, The Shop, to pilot distributed ledger use cases relevant to insurance and provider network interactions.
The technical exploration of PokitDok Dokchain emphasized blockchain-native capabilities, including an immutable transaction ledger, identity and consent primitives, and smart contract orchestration for transactional workflows. Workstreams focused on secure data exchange, auditable transaction trails, consent management, and programmable workflow automation consistent with Blockchain Platform functional patterns.
Operational coverage for the pilots was centered in VSP's innovation lab and extended into collaborative experiments with members of the DokChain Alliance, a coalition of health systems, insurers, technology providers, and financial institutions. The program targeted business functions such as provider network coordination, eligibility and authorization workflows, and transactional settlement processes where distributed ledger governance and shared state could reduce reconciliation friction.
Governance and strategic participation were formalized in 2018 when VSP secured two observer seats on PokitDok’s board of directors and became an active contributor to the DokChain Alliance. That governance position informed pilot design and alliance-level interoperability discussions, positioning VSP to influence common standards and consortium operating practices around PokitDok Dokchain.
