ChatEHR is built on large language model techniques similar to GPT-4 and uses information from an individual patient record to generate responses and summaries in natural language.
The implementation focuses on functional capabilities typical of clinical conversational agents, including automated chart summarization, retrieval of longitudinal record elements, and conversational point of care queries to support chart review workflows. ChatEHR is designed to surface specific data points and condensed narrative summaries to streamline routine documentation review, the functionality explicitly excluding provision of medical advice or clinical decision support.
ChatEHR was integrated directly with Stanford Health Care's Epic electronic health record to enable secure access to patient data for query responses and summarization. The deployment is currently a controlled pilot at Stanford Hospital limited to about 30 clinicians, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, who are acting as accuracy monitors and feedback contributors to refine the model and prompt handling.
