The deployment focused on the Fraud Prevention team operating from Singapore with operational coverage for the Greater China market, including China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Governance centered on centralized screening rulesets, structured review workflows and analyst quality controls aligned to APAC fraud operations, with contract fraud specialists embedded to identify prevalent fraud patterns and perform background checks. Citigroup Singapore | Banking and Financial Services | 8000 | $2.0B | Singapore | Cynopsis Solutions | Cynopsis Athena | AML, Fraud and Compliance | 2015 | n/a |
In 2015 Citigroup Singapore deployed Cynopsis Athena in the AML, Fraud and Compliance category as part of an AML operations analyst automation program labeled ATHENA, with deployment objectives to automate non-judgmental case investigation steps and surface ready-to-use investigative intelligence. The Cynopsis Athena implementation was scoped to AML operations analysts and designed to produce business intelligence on focal entries, transactional counterparties and transactional behavior in an easily consumable format for downstream investigation work.
Cynopsis Athena was configured to ingest data from multiple source databases into a Big Data repository based on Hive and HDFS, with data staged across two distinct staging libraries after processing. The solution used Hive queries and MapReduce scripts for batch transformations, and relied on Impala for interactive SQL-style query access to processed datasets to support analyst exploration and visualization.
The technical stack and integrations included Sqoop to export BAM historical data from Microsoft SQL Server and to import Oracle data into HDFS, Hive for ETL and staging transformations, Impala for interactive query performance without running MapReduce jobs, and a Cloudera 5.3 distribution for Hadoop platform management. Data flows moved from source databases into HDFS, through Hive-based transformation pipelines, into the staging libraries, and finally into visualization systems consumed by AML operations analysts.
Implementation activities and governance included developing HQL to transform data between staging libraries, scripting Sqoop imports from Oracle and SQL Server, and instrumenting Hive processing to prepare datasets for visualization. The deployment ran from Nov 2015 to present and was intended to improve the efficiency and quality of Anti Money Laundering case investigations by providing up-to-date, non-judgmental analytical insights. The vendor for the application is Cynopsis Solutions and the full application name Cynopsis Athena is used throughout the environment.
