Algar Telecom | Professional Services | 18000 | $607M | Brazil | IBM | IBM z/VM | Network Virtualisation | 2022 | n/a |
In 2022, Algar Telecom implemented IBM z/VM for Network Virtualisation as part of an infrastructure consolidation and virtualization initiative. The deployment centralized compute on an IBM zEnterprise server and used IBM z/VM to host virtualized Red Hat Enterprise Linux instances, aligning the company application strategy with the Network Virtualisation category to support telecommunications operations in Brazil.
The implementation configured IBM z/VM to virtualize more than 90 previously distinct server workloads onto a single mainframe platform, leveraging z/VM hypervisor capabilities to provide multi-tenant VM lifecycle management, resource partitioning, and consolidated systems management. Functional focus included workload consolidation, infrastructure simplification, and platform-level reliability and security for core business applications.
Integrations explicitly included IBM zEnterprise hardware and Red Hat Enterprise Linux virtual machines running on IBM z/VM, with implementation support from IBM Systems and Technology Group Lab Services. The architecture addressed telecommunications datacenter requirements and aligned with IBM System z offerings targeted at communications service providers, while preserving enterprise-grade transaction and data handling on the mainframe.
Governance and operational outcomes were recorded by the client and IBM, with Algar Telecom reporting simplified IT infrastructure, reduced data center floor space, and approximately 70 percent savings in energy and cooling expenses, along with an estimated 30 percent increase in operational efficiency. The configuration emphasized centralized control, ongoing systems management on IBM z/VM, and platform consolidation as the primary governance levers for operations and service delivery.

City of Gelsenkirchen | Government | 7100 | $1.7B | Germany | IBM | IBM z/VM | Network Virtualisation | 2009 | Gkd -El- Gesellschaft Fuer Kommunikation Und Datentechnologie |
In 2009 City of Gelsenkirchen provisioned IBM z/VM as part of a broader IBM System z10 Enterprise Class mainframe upgrade delivered by municipal IT service provider Gkd -El- Gesellschaft Fuer Kommunikation Und Datentechnologie, targeting Network Virtualisation to consolidate SAP infrastructure. The deployment served the SAP ERP 6.0 landscape that holds administrative process data for the city and supports approximately 2,000 users across municipal and non-commercial customers.
The implementation centered on IBM z/VM to provide virtualization for Linux on Systemz alongside z/OS and DB2 for z/OS, using Network Virtualisation to host the complete SAP solution set with enterprise features such as high availability, hardened security, and simplified systems management. The technical configuration leveraged specialty processors zIIP and IFL to offload workloads and optimize software licensing and operating cost structures, and the IBM z/VM layer delivered standard virtualization, workload partitioning, and consolidation capabilities typical of mainframe deployments.
Integrations explicitly included the SAP ERP 6.0 application stack, DB2 for z/OS databases, z/OS system services, Linux on Systemz guest environments, and the associated network infrastructure used to expose SAP services to municipal users. Operational coverage encompassed city administrative functions and services for additional gkd-el customers, with the mainframe environment running the centralized SAP landscape used by multiple organizations.
Governance was centralized within gkd-el, where 84 employees support the service and a focused operations team of eight staff operate and manage the entire Systemz-based SAP landscape including IBM z/VM. Reported outcomes from the migration included a 270 percent increase in SAP system throughput, a 30 percent reduction in total operating costs through use of zIIP and IFL processors, and an overall productivity uplift reported as 3.8 times, while the mainframe platform provided the stability and mature virtualization required for municipal IT service delivery.

Embasa | Utilities | 5000 | $725M | Brazil | IBM | IBM z/VM | Network Virtualisation | 2011 | n/a |
In 2011, Embasa implemented IBM z/VM as the virtualization layer supporting a Network Virtualisation initiative to run SAP on Linux alongside z/OS. The project responded to a need for a high performance, cost effective way to introduce SAP while retaining the existing database solution, avoiding additional server platforms and reducing IT landscape complexity.
The technical implementation upgraded the IT environment to an IBM z Systems server provisioned with seven central processors dedicated to z/OS workloads to run specific DB2 transactions, and six IFL processors to support SUSE Linux Enterprise Server instances hosted on IBM z/VM. IBM z/VM provided the virtualization and partitioning needed to run Linux workloads concurrently with z/OS, enabling SAP applications to operate on Linux on the same mainframe platform.
Embasa integrated SAP on Linux with DB2 transaction processing within the z Systems environment, leveraging internal application to database connections to minimize external network dependencies. The deployment positioned Embasa IBM z/VM Network Virtualisation to support core business functions for application hosting and database processing, while avoiding the introduction of additional server operating platforms.
Consolidation of multiple workloads onto the z Systems platform removed the need to add smaller servers in the data center, freeing space and reducing energy and cooling requirements. Internal connections between applications and the database eliminated external cabling, network switches and additional power supplies, simplifying the system landscape and making operations easier to understand and maintain.
