Century Engineering | Construction and Real Estate | 500 | $50M | United States | Rackspace Technology | Rackspace Cloud Native | Professional Services | 2020 | Onica by Rackspace Technology |
In 2020, Century Engineering implemented Rackspace Cloud Native as a Professional Services engagement to commercialize its SmartSWM stormwater management solution. The initiative centralized cloud native development, Internet of Things and edge data ingestion, and data management to provide real time remote monitoring and automated control for stormwater facilities.
The Rackspace Cloud Native deployment delivered a multi tier architecture combining AWS hosted backend services and edge microcontroller nodes at sites. Functional modules included sensor telemetry ingestion, signal conditioning and tamper detection at the edge, a cloud based decision support engine that consumes hyper local weather forecasts and on site telemetry, and orchestration logic to command release valves. Hardware changes and firmware tuning addressed analog to digital signal quality for pressure transducers, cellular modem connectivity, and solar power monitoring to ensure reliable field operation.
Onica by Rackspace Technology acted as the implementation partner to refine product architecture and production readiness on AWS. Integrations explicitly included AWS platform services for cloud hosting, IoT telemetry pipelines between on site microcontrollers and the cloud decision support system, and data management workflows for telemetry, weather forecast inputs, and operational alerts. The solution supports remote operations for monitoring water depth, temperature, and solar generation, and it enables automated actuation of discharge valves based on computed optimal water surface elevations and discharge rates.
Rollout followed a two phase approach starting with hardware consolidation and signal interface fixes, followed by cloud enhancements for tamper alerts, security hardening, and improved backend logic. Governance centered on operationalizing automated control workflows and remote override capabilities for engineering teams, with documentation and component guidance provided during implementation. Reported outcomes included improved system reliability and security, reduced field maintenance complexity, and operational benefits such as smaller facility footprints and enhanced pollutant removal, and the team is pursuing machine learning driven predictive models as the next development phase.

TrueCar | Professional Services | 441 | $161M | United States | Rackspace Technology | Rackspace Cloud Native | Professional Services | 2020 | n/a |
In 2020 TrueCar implemented Rackspace Cloud Native as part of a Professional Services engagement to enable cloud native development, application modernization and data management for its vehicle pricing and analytics platform. The initiative was executed with Onica by Rackspace Technology and centered on moving more than 1,000 virtual machines into Amazon Web Services to eliminate data center constraints and target a long term 50% reduction in operational costs.
The implementation instrumented TrueCar's Vehicle Intelligence System using a Hadoop powered big data pipeline on AWS, with the VIS ingesting inventory attributes for make, model, year and options and producing pricing outputs. Rackspace Cloud Native supported full stack components including the VIS data pipeline, primary databases updated every 30 minutes, analytics processing that handles more than 65 billion data points daily and pricing engines capable of evaluating more than 200 billion vehicle configurations each day. Development and test functional capability was delivered as self service space pods implemented as Docker containers running on Amazon EC2 Container Service, providing developers full replica environments.
Architecturally the solution integrated AWS native services explicitly, with connectivity via AWS Direct Connect, compute on Amazon EC2, object storage in Amazon S3 for automobile images and log archives, event and stream processing with AWS Lambda and Amazon Kinesis Streams, Kinesis Firehose to S3 for permanent log storage, analytics in Amazon Redshift and search via Amazon Elasticsearch Service. The Rackspace Cloud Native deployment used container orchestration on Amazon ECS to manage space pods and reproducible test environments, and it instrumented near real time notification to consumer applications when vehicle data updated. These integrations supported both unstructured clickstream analysis and structured inventory feeds from more than 12,000 data sources.
Governance and operational change included an infrastructure as code approach that collapsed historical silos between infrastructure and application teams, a small operations organization managing a cloud operated environment, and a rollout model that prioritized self service developer pods to accelerate feature experimentation. The new model reduced environment provisioning time from as long as six months to approximately 15 minutes for prototype environments, enabled closer collaboration between engineering and operations and centralized big data analytics for product and data science teams. Outcomes explicitly stated by the customer included improved scalability to meet demand, faster product delivery and an anticipated 50% reduction in operational costs under the Rackspace Cloud Native Professional Services engagement.
