Arthrex | Life Sciences | 7500 | $3.2B | United States | Rackspace Technology | Rackspace Data Modernization | Professional Services | 2018 | n/a |
In 2018, Arthrex implemented Rackspace Data Modernization as a Professional Services engagement to build a HIPAA compliant postoperative communications portal hosted on Amazon Web Services. Rackspace Technology architected the solution to leverage cloud storage and managed databases while preserving on premises research storage, creating a scalable foundation for media heavy postoperative records.
The implementation delivered a surgeon to patient communications portal and companion mobile experience, with configurable postoperative report templates that allow surgeons to upload imaging, video, and notes directly from the operating room. Functional capabilities include secure patient login, templated instructional content, embedded video messaging, and an extensible medical imagery library accessible on demand.
Architecturally the solution uses Amazon S3 for durable, highly available object storage and Amazon RDS for MySQL for transactional metadata and record management, while retaining select datasets on premises for research and regulatory compliance. The project integrated a previously developed mobile app to ingest media and metadata from Arthrex medical imaging systems, and the cloud layer enforces encryption in transit and at rest to meet HIPAA requirements.
Operational scope focused on surgeons, patients, and supporting clinical staff, shifting postoperative communication workflows by enabling surgeons to generate consistent digital reports rather than relying on physical media or ad hoc phone follow ups. Governance changes included templated content authoring and credentialed patient access controls to standardize content delivery and reduce risk associated with misplaced physical records.
Explicit outcomes reported by Arthrex include a patient survey where 92 percent of respondents said they did not feel the need to call the office with postoperative questions, and a surgeon reported a 68 percent decrease in patient calls compared to three years earlier. Rackspace Data Modernization supported these outcomes through the combination of AWS scale, secure data handling, and integrated imaging workflows.

Babbly | Professional Services | 20 | $3M | Canada | Rackspace Technology | Rackspace Data Modernization | Professional Services | 2018 | n/a |
In 2018, Babbly implemented Rackspace Data Modernization as a Professional Services engagement to stabilize an in development Kubernetes infrastructure and to meet HIPAA compliance requirements for a marketplace launch. The project targeted platform reliability, security and automated deployment workflows to support rapid application releases ahead of a closed beta submission and Google Play launch.
The implementation provisioned a production ready Amazon EKS cluster integrated with Amazon RDS for database management, and used a multi stage CI CD pipeline for development and production promotion. Infrastructure as code was executed with AWS CloudFormation and Onica’s Runway tool with native support for Kustomize, while Bitbucket pipelines managed application deployments. Intra cluster encryption and a security first service mesh, Linkerd, secured pod to pod communication and added observability without code changes.
Operational integrations included Amazon Certificate Manager integrated with Elastic Load Balancing and Amazon Route 53 for TLS termination and managed DNS, AWS WAFv2 attached to Elastic Load Balancing for web application protection, and Amazon CloudWatch Container Insights and log groups for centralized monitoring and audit ready logs. The deployment used the ALB Ingress controller and external DNS module to automate Route 53 record updates, and pod level IAM permissions in Amazon EKS to enforce least permissive access. The architecture was deployed across multiple availability zones with automated database backups and autoscaling enabled to support production workloads.
Onica, a Rackspace Technology company, completed the production ready Kubernetes architecture in six weeks using Runway to accelerate infrastructure as code deployments, and conducted working sessions and documentation to transfer operational knowledge to Babbly’s DevOps engineer. CLI based cluster provisioning was replaced with managed infrastructure as code to introduce compliance checkpoints and repeatable governance for future rollouts. The Rackspace Data Modernization implementation focused on platform security, observability, CI CD efficiency and operational resiliency, and enabled Babbly to meet HIPAA related controls while improving uptime and release cadence.

Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust | Healthcare | 7444 | $578M | United Kingdom | Rackspace Technology | Rackspace Data Modernization | Professional Services | 2019 | n/a |
In 2019, Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust implemented Rackspace Data Modernization as a Professional Services engagement to provision a resilient private cloud and managed services platform. The program addressed an urgent timetable, requiring the Trust to replatform data and applications within roughly six months under a fixed timeline with contractual penalties, while supporting operations across roughly 7,000 staff, more than 300 distinct services and 150 sites.
Rackspace Data Modernization delivered cloud adoption and migration services centered on a private cloud deployment using VMware RPCV, configured for resilience across two data centers with secure managed services. The engagement included cloud native enablement and data modernization capabilities, alongside managed security and ongoing upgrades to support clinical-grade availability and responsiveness. The technical scope emphasized infrastructure provisioning, platform configuration, operational runbooks, and the establishment of a DevOps orientation for future application and data work.
Operational integrations prioritized clinical and patient-facing interfaces to underpin online health services, including remote consultations, online testing and prescriptions, and transactional workflows that can be automated. The environment scaled from approximately 200 concurrent remote users to 2,000 within 48 hours during the COVID-19 crisis, demonstrating the operational coverage across community clinics, hospital sites and specialty services such as sexual health. The engagement also set a foundation to broker public cloud capacity through Rackspace Technology as the Trust explores a multicloud path.
Governance and rollout were driven by 24x7 support from the Rackspace Technology team and close collaboration with CNWL ICT leadership, with the initial phase completed by November 2019. That delivery model included tight change control, rapid incident response and cross-functional problem solving to minimize clinical disruption. Process changes and improved system responsiveness reduced routine task processing times reported by staff, allowing clinicians and administrative teams to refocus on patient care.
Outcomes explicitly reported in the program included immediate operational improvements, a measurable reduction in specific administrative task times from around five to six hours down to two hours, and clearer, more predictable cost models. Next steps documented by the Trust include further data modernization to enable predictive, data-driven decision making, continued strengthening of data safeguarding and security, and exploration of multicloud adoption using Rackspace Technology as a broker for public cloud resources.
