Hull University Teaching Hospitals United Kingdom | Healthcare | 8500 | $678M | United Kingdom | Zebra Technologies | Zebra OneCare | Professional Services | 2019 | n/a |
In 2019 Hull University Teaching Hospitals United Kingdom implemented Zebra OneCare as part of a broader real-time location system rollout tied to its Scan4Safety programme, with the Zebra OneCare Professional Services contract providing device and reader maintenance coverage. The OneCare engagement was specified to guarantee turnaround times for mobile computers and to maintain fixed FX7500 readers, creating a support and lifecycle layer for the RTLS infrastructure.
The deployment architecture paired the maintenance service with Zebra MotionWorks healthcare RTLS and a large-scale passive RFID topology. The Trust installed over 650 FX7500 fixed RFID readers and more than 400 antennas, networked via Power over Ethernet cabling exceeding 6.2 miles to provide consistent zone coverage for patient entrances, exits and clinical wards. Clinician handheld capability was delivered through 320 Zebra TC52-HC mobile computers paired with Zebra RFD8500 handheld RFID sleds and on-site label printing using Zebra ZT411 industrial printers mounted on smart trolley hubs, enabling immediate tag issuance and inventory updates at point of tagging.
Operational scope covered both main campuses and all patient-facing departments, with a baseline inventory of more than 72,000 labelled assets and ongoing labelling of up to 2,700 sterile trays weekly. Functional capabilities implemented included passive RFID asset tracking, zone-based location discovery via MotionWorks, handheld ad hoc inventory checks, and task enablement for future workflows such as patient belongings tracking and hire equipment return alerts. The Zebra OneCare Professional Services arrangement explicitly underpinned availability of hardware and reader uptime to support these operational capabilities.
Governance and rollout were led by the Trusts Scan4Safety Programme, which scoped the solution for flexibility and long term expansion, and established processes for tagging, desktop and mobile searching, and clinical adoption. The project included a major equipment inventory exercise, the introduction of smart trolley labelling workflows, and clinician training to use zone maps on desktop PCs and wands for precise item identification. These governance changes aligned RTLS operational practices to procurement and clinical scheduling workflows.
Explicit outcomes reported alongside the Zebra OneCare-backed deployment included reduced time spent searching for equipment across approximately 2,500 staff, faster locate times achieved through handheld wands, improved stock visibility for procurement decisions, and fewer cancelled procedures due to missing sterile trays. The Zebra OneCare maintenance plan supported these operational outcomes by ensuring device and reader serviceability and predictable maintenance response for the hospital grade hardware used in the RTLS solution.

Waitrose & Partners | Retail | 49600 | $7.7B | United Kingdom | Zebra Technologies | Zebra OneCare | Professional Services | 2021 | n/a |
In 2021, Waitrose & Partners implemented Zebra OneCare as part of a broader mobile computing program supporting Zebra TC51 enterprise-grade touch computers. The programme began with a 16-site pilot to validate the TC51 as a single multifunction device for tasks such as stocktaking, e-commerce picking, click and collect and in-store customer service, aligning with the Working Flexibly initiative to enable Partners to operate across store functions.
Zebra OneCare is positioned in the Professional Services category and provided the contractual device support and predictable cost model for the deployment, with fulfillment by Computacenter. Device provisioning and lifecycle management relied on Zebra Mobility DNA capabilities, using StageNow for barcode-based staging and rapid application loading, DataWedge to format and route captured barcode data to existing applications, and LifeGuard to deliver ongoing security updates and patches for the TC51 lifecycle. SOTI MobiControl was deployed to remotely oversee and manage each device, supporting centralized mobile device management and security policy enforcement.
Functional configuration work consolidated previously separate applications, merging key customer-query functions into a single application and configuring home screens to surface branch stock management and click and collect tools. The technical implementation included porting Windows applications to Android and instrumenting device-level customisation such as programmable left and right side buttons, headset and text-to-speech support for accessibility, and application placement optimized for frequent workflows.
Operational governance used a structured change management approach, with a senior manager in each store overseeing cultural adoption and managers responsible for day-to-day user enablement, project team on-site support at go live, and a dashboard of performance metrics used to validate targets before handing stores to the line of business that now manages the MFD programme. Reported outcomes explicitly included reduced device maintenance and repair costs, time savings from fewer device searches and phone point visits, improved ability for Partners to access product information and suggest alternatives during e-commerce picking, and positive Partner feedback on usability and accessibility features.
