American Water Utilities 6500 $4.2B United States SAP SAP Enterprise Asset Management Enterprise Asset Management 2017 n/a In 2017 American Water implemented SAP Enterprise Asset Management to centralize asset records and work management for district operations. SAP Enterprise Asset Management, in the Enterprise Asset Management category, was used to create and maintain Functional Locations, Equipment, and Maintenance Plans across production and distribution assets to support field maintenance and work order lifecycle management. The implementation emphasized core EAM modules and configuration work including Functional Locations, Equipment master data, Maintenance Plans, task list notes, and work order creation and completion workflows. The project included updates to maintenance task lists, creation of fillable PDFs, and the use of MapCall as a district-level work management system, with Excel macros developed to reconcile and compare records between the two asset management systems. Operational controls were enforced through a non-production SAP environment, with testing and approval gates required before artifacts were promoted to SAP production. GPS data capture projects were conducted in districts to improve spatial accuracy of asset records, and operational coverage included district teams such as Greenwood, Indiana, where training and hands-on support were delivered. Governance and rollout focused on user training, documentation, and ongoing support, with training documents, videos, and direct assistance to districts for data clean-up of Functional Locations, Equipment, and Maintenance Plans. Day-to-day operational support included assisting districts with work order creation, completion, changes, and troubleshooting SAP-EAM system errors, as well as participation in special SAP-EAM projects to sustain accuracy and operational readiness.
