Alexion Pharmaceuticals Ireland | Life Sciences | 1000 | $270M | Ireland | SAP | SAP S/4 HANA - Sales and Distribution (SD) | Supply Chain Management | 2020 | n/a | In 2020, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Ireland deployed SAP S/4 HANA - Sales and Distribution (SD) as a core element of its Supply Chain Management platform provided by SAP, targeting affiliate Customer Operations and regional EMEA coordination. The implementation was positioned to support end to end order to delivery processes for hospital and specialty channels, aligning with roles responsible for new product launches, product transfers, and retirements across the affiliate and regional organization. SAP S/4 HANA - Sales and Distribution (SD) was configured to deliver standard Sales and Distribution capabilities, including order management, pricing and discounting logic, credit and returns handling, delivery and shipping documentation, and billing and invoicing workflows. Configuration emphasis reflected pharmaceutical requirements, with SD processes mapped to support regulated order acceptance, shipment traceability, and coordination with inventory planning for product transfers and launch allocations. The deployment interoperated with the affiliate functional landscape, embedding SD workflows with Procurement and Inventory functions through SAP MM aligned processes, and integrating operational touchpoints with Sales, Finance, Order Book Management, Credit Management, Distribution, Quality Assurance, Regulatory affairs, and Contract Management. The design explicitly accounted for Business Intelligence and Reporting integration to provide regional and international reporting feeds, and included requirements for electronic order exchange as EDI connectivity was identified as a strong implementation consideration. Governance was structured around the Customer Operations management layer, positioning the Customer Operations Manager as the primary escalation point and liaison between affiliate teams and Global Supply Chain. Operational controls emphasized cross functional business reviews, audit and inspection support, regulatory compliance workflows, and formal reporting lines into regional Customer Account Management leadership to sustain process consistency, compliance, and project delivery oversight.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals Ireland | Life Sciences | 1000 | $270M | Ireland | SAP | SAP S/4 HANA - Materials Management (MM) | Inventory Management | 2020 | n/a | In 2020, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Ireland implemented SAP S/4 HANA - Materials Management (MM) as its Inventory Management application to centralize inventory control and support end-to-end order to delivery workflows across its EMEA affiliate footprint. The implementation was positioned to align with Global Supply Chain and Customer Operations requirements, supporting new product launches, product retirements, product transfers, and local regulatory audit readiness while enabling consistent inventory governance across the affiliate organization. SAP S/4 HANA - Materials Management (MM) was configured to deliver core materials and inventory capabilities including material master governance, procurement-to-receipt workflows, goods receipt and goods issue processing, inventory valuation and stock accounting, batch and lot traceability suited to pharmaceutical product handling, and warehouse stock movements. Configuration emphasis included controls for order fulfillment support, returns and credit decision workflows in coordination with Finance, and parameters to enforce compliance for regulated product handling and release. Operational integration focused on application-level alignment with SAP SD for order to invoice processing and with the Business Intelligence and Reporting function to feed regional and international performance and compliance reports. The implementation architecture accommodated interfaces for distribution and external trading partners, and provisions were made to support EDI platform integration where required, while maintaining integration points with Sales, Finance, Quality Assurance, Regulatory, and Contracts stakeholders to preserve end-to-end transactional integrity. Governance and process restructuring embedded new cross-functional operational practices, including regular customer and affiliate business reviews, escalation paths through the Customer Operations Representative and regional Customer Account Management leadership, and documented controls for internal and external audit support. The deployment emphasized role-based responsibilities for inventory stewardship, aligned decision criteria for returns and credits with Finance policies, and established change control for product lifecycle events to ensure consistent execution of supply chain and customer operations processes.
