In 2012 Boeing implemented the Aras PLM Platform for Product Lifecycle Management across engineering design workflows. The implementation was delivered with SI/VAR AESSiS and emphasized customization of the Aras PLM Platform to support program-specific engineering processes.
Implementation encompassed both client and server components, with Windows Forms and C# .NET clients, Windows services, and server-side SOA webservices implemented using WCF and hosted on IIS 7.0. XML parsing, COM DLL integrations for Excel import and export, and custom JavaScript validation controls were used to adapt user interfaces and automate validation and approval steps. Teamcenter Enterprise received targeted customization work to enable interoperability with the Aras PLM Platform.
Integration architecture relied on SOAP based interoperability using gSOAP and AXIS2 with Apache stacks, and C# and C++ were used for application integration and SOA endpoints. Back-end persistence used Oracle 11g and Microsoft SQL Server as data stores for design and stress analysis data. The Aras PLM Platform was integrated with other PDM systems and engineering analysis tools such as eVista and IOD to exchange configuration and stress analysis results.
Governance practices centered on version control and traceability, using Clearcase and SVN for source management and code review and enforcing traceability compliance between requirements and test cases. Quality assurance included creation of test plans, unit and regression testing, and development of automated test scripts using QTP UFT for regression automation. Change management and defect remediation workflows supported ongoing ARAS customization and functional enhancements.
Operational coverage included multiple Boeing design teams using the Aras PLM Platform and a migrated stress analysis Windows application that reads design data from databases to perform mathematical analysis and feed approval workflows. The deployment tied Product Lifecycle Management tooling into engineering data capture, validation, and cross-system orchestration while preserving traceability and source control practices.
