In 2018, Anglian Water implemented IBM Db2 as its Database Management platform to support SAP Business Suite and SAP for Utilities workloads and to improve operational resilience for customer billing, field service and contact center processes. The project was executed as a nine month program with Capgemini hosting the twin data centers and a planned cutover executed over a national holiday weekend in August with immediate go live on the following Tuesday.
The implementation consolidated infrastructure by replacing 24 machines with six IBM Power System E850 and two IBM Power System S822 servers running IBM AIX and IBM Db2 software, and applied IBM Db2 advanced adaptive compression to reduce total data volumes from approximately 5 TB to 2 TB. Core SAP solutions moved onto IBM Db2 included SAP Business Suite, SAP for Utilities, SAP Business Warehouse, SAP Enterprise Portal, SAP Gateway and SAP Process Orchestration, with capacity planning using IBM Capacity Upgrade on Demand to enable scalable peak processing.
Operational integrations were delivered with Capgemini as the hosting integrator and IBM Db2 SAP Migration Services together with IBM Systems Lab Services providing migration and platform services, resulting in a twin data center deployment with enhanced disaster recovery and reduced storage requirements. The implementation leveraged aligned release cycles between SAP NetWeaver ERP and IBM Db2 to enable paced adoption of new application and database features while sustaining SLA commitments for contact center and field operations.
Governance was structured around a unified Anglian Water Capgemini and IBM delivery team model, with joint program leadership presenting the business case to executive stakeholders and coordinating a controlled production cutover during low transaction volume windows. System configuration emphasized high availability, data compression, and database licensing optimization to fit funding constraints for the Asset Management Period defined by the regulator.
Documented outcomes from the IBM Db2 deployment include a 66 percent reduction in server footprint, a reduction in data volume from about 5 TB to 2 TB through adaptive compression, and up to 40 percent shorter batch times which support stricter SLA adherence. The consolidation also lowered database licensing and storage footprint pressures, and the combined IBM Power Systems and IBM Db2 architecture increased operational resilience and scalability for Anglian Water’s SAP driven business functions.
