Anglian Water | Utilities | 5000 | $2.0B | United Kingdom | SAP | SAP IS-Utilities | Utilities ERP | 2008 | Capgemini |
In 2008, Anglian Water implemented SAP IS-Utilities as its Utilities ERP platform to consolidate core business processes supporting contact centre operations, field engineering work orders, finance, human resources and customer billing. The SAP IS-Utilities deployment was positioned as an enterprise Utilities ERP modernization to improve availability and operational resilience for the company that serves more than six million customers in a water scarce region.
The implementation encompassed SAP Business Suite components alongside SAP for Utilities, SAP Business Warehouse, SAP Enterprise Portal, SAP Gateway and SAP Process Orchestration, with configuration focused on transactional billing, field service acceptance, and batch processing workflows. SAP IS-Utilities and related SAP modules were reconfigured to run on a new database and server architecture, and technical workstreams included database compression and batch tuning to reduce processing windows and storage demands.
Architecturally the solution was moved onto IBM Power Systems servers, specifically IBM Power System E850 and IBM Power System S822 hardware running IBM AIX and IBM Db2, with the SAP applications hosted by Capgemini across twin Capgemini data centres. The migration to IBM Db2 leveraged adaptive compression to reduce live data volumes from about 5 TB to 2 TB, and the environment was provisioned with IBM Capacity Upgrade on Demand to enable flexible scaling for peak processing needs. The cutover was executed over a national holiday weekend, with immediate go live the following Tuesday to minimize business disruption.
Capgemini acted as the systems integrator and host, working alongside IBM Db2 SAP Migration Services and IBM Systems Lab Services in a nine month delivery programme, executed with integrated governance and a single team operating model. Release alignment between SAP NetWeaver ERP and IBM Db2 was part of the governance rationale, enabling coordinated application and database maintenance cycles and controlled adoption of new platform features.
Explicit results reported from the deployment include a 66% reduction in server footprint, batch processing times shortened by up to 40 percent, and a reduction in stored data volumes by roughly 60 percent through Db2 compression. The program also delivered lower database licensing and support costs, reduced storage and backup requirements, improved SLA compliance for batch windows, and increased operational resilience to support sustained service delivery for customer facing operations.

Ecotricity | Utilities | 407 | $747M | United Kingdom | SAP | SAP IS-Utilities | Utilities ERP | 2007 | IBM |
In 2007, Ecotricity implemented SAP IS-Utilities as its Utilities ERP platform. The implementation established SAP IS-Utilities as the core application for customer-facing utility processes and billing within the company technology stack.
The deployment centered on SAP IS-Utilities modules for customer service, billing and invoicing, contract and tariff management, and meter-to-cash orchestration, integrated with SAP ERP ECC for financial postings and with SAP CRM and SAP PI for customer lifecycle and middleware connectivity. IBM served as the system integrator, overseeing configuration, data interfaces, and cutover sequencing, while the Ecotricity IT organization retained governance of functional requirements and operational readiness.
Subsequent technical analysis and architecture work documented in 2013 described the run-time infrastructure supporting SAP ERP ECC and IS-Utilities, noting VMware ESXi 5.1 virtualization, Windows 2003 and 2008 R2 application servers, and SAN storage from IBM and Fujitsu. Those infrastructure components housed the SAP application stack and integration layers, aligning platform architecture with the SAP IS-Utilities deployment model.
Operational scope covered customer service, billing, finance and field operations across Ecotricity UK operations, with IBM and internal IT teams collaborating on technical architecture, solution specification, and implementation planning. An Infrastructure Architect engagement in October 2013 produced detailed technical recommendations to inform purchasing and future implementation phases for the SAP IS-Utilities environment.

ESB Group | Utilities | 9600 | $8.0B | Ireland | SAP | SAP IS-Utilities | Utilities ERP | 2005 | n/a |
In 2005, ESB Group implemented SAP IS-Utilities as its Utilities ERP platform to support core utility operations across the organization. The deployment established an enterprise SAP landscape running on DB2 databases hosted on Linux and AIX servers, with SAP Solution Manager used to manage system setup and configuration.
SAP IS-Utilities was configured to address utility-specific functional workflows including customer care and billing, meter and device management, contract and billing processes, and field service workflow orchestration. Implementation activity included a new PO landscape installation and configuration, multiple full system refreshes using different methods, and ongoing Basis administration to stabilize interfaces and scheduled processes.
The SAP IS-Utilities implementation was integrated with a broad SAP stack and middleware layer as part of operational support, including SAP CRM, PI and XI middleware, GRC for controls, BW and BOBJ for reporting, SRM for procurement processes, PPM and Portal for project and portal access, and Solution Manager for operational governance. Onsite Basis consultants provided end user support, incident investigation and resolution, and managed system-level configuration changes across the landscape.
Operational governance was staffed by a dedicated Basis team reporting to a team leader, providing senior subject matter expertise and knowledge transfer to support teams. The team maintained stakeholder relationships with senior business owners to identify process improvement opportunities and to support continued rollouts of SAP IS-Utilities across ESB business functions such as billing, customer service, and field operations.

National Grid | Utilities | 31654 | $18.4B | United Kingdom | SAP | SAP IS-Utilities | Utilities ERP | 2008 | n/a |
In 2008 National Grid implemented SAP IS-Utilities within a Utilities ERP program. The engagement focused on a Data Centre Migration and an SAP implementation at the Solihull UK site, with transformation activities and ongoing BAU support for the support division that handles domestic and global support.
The implementation delivered SAP IS-Utilities alongside SAP Business Intelligence BI, BusinessObjects BO, Enterprise Portal EP, Solution Manager Solman, Process Integration PI, HANA platform components and SPNEGO authentication. Configuration work centered on ISU functional workflows common to Utilities ERP deployments, with integration points established across reporting, portal access and process orchestration workloads.
Infrastructure architecture and deployment included AIX and Windows 2008 application tiers, Oracle 11g database instances, HACMP clustering, and explicit setup of high availability and disaster recovery environments. The delivery included data centre migration tasks and coordination with AWS for cloud platform components, while the SAP landscape was consolidated and prepared for future upgrades.
Governance was organized under an SAP Basis Architect who was the single point of contact for SAP infrastructure, responsible for solution design for implementation, support, consolidation, migration and upgrade, plus pre sales, transition and team management. Project execution required coordination with third party and infrastructure vendors and established operational ownership for availability and landscape management.
