In 2005 Asahi Kasei deployed IBM PowerVM on an IBM Power Systems E870C server to virtualize SAP HANA database infrastructure under the Network Virtualisation category. The engagement targeted consolidation of multiple physical SAP HANA instances onto a single, centrally managed platform to reduce operational complexity and centralize database operations.
The implementation used an IBM Power Systems E870C configured with 20 POWER8 processor cores and 1.4 TB of main memory, leveraging IBM PowerVM capabilities to create multiple logical partitions, known as LPARs. Each LPAR hosted an isolated operating system and virtual machine instance, typically SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications running SAP HANA, and was configured with precise resource shares and dynamic memory and compute allocation to manage ad-hoc and peak workloads. Capacity on Demand functionality was enabled to allow elastic addition of cores and memory without introducing additional physical servers. IBM PowerVM is cited as the virtualization layer that enabled on-premises cloud-like activation and flexible resource scaling.
The deployment included a data migration proof of concept delivered by IBM and IBM Business Partner AJS Inc. to validate endian conversion and performance targets, and the PoC informed a total cost of ownership analysis based on Asahi Kasei workload requirements. SAP HANA was provisioned across production, test, and development LPARs on the single E870C platform, consolidating environment management and reducing the need for separate physical systems. Integrations explicitly implemented include SAP HANA and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications running within IBM PowerVM-managed virtual machines.
Operational coverage focused on database administration, development and test functions, and corporate IT management, with governance centered on partition-level resource allocation and policy-driven capacity activation. The configuration supported isolated lifecycle workflows for production and non-production instances while enabling shared hardware management and centralized administration. The PoC and subsequent configuration choices shaped rollout sequencing and acceptance criteria to address data migration and performance validation needs.
Asahi Kasei reported improved flexibility, near-limitless scalability through Capacity on Demand, and higher solution reliability as direct outcomes of the IBM PowerVM implementation. The company reduced administration workload and consolidated multiple SAP HANA environments onto a single managed system, enabling faster provisioning of new SAP HANA instances and supporting long-term growth objectives with an SAP-certified infrastructure.
