Albertsons | Retail | 280000 | $80.4B | United States | Mirakl | Mirakl Marketplace Platform | eCommerce | 2018 |
In 2018 Albertsons Companies implemented the Mirakl Marketplace Platform as an eCommerce initiative to create an integrated, branded online marketplace that extends its grocery and pharmacy storefronts. The project was executed with system integrator McFadyen Digital and explicitly used Mirakl Marketplace Platform alongside a Magento Commerce front end to accelerate time to market.
The implementation used a platform-based architecture, pairing Magento Commerce as the cloud-hosted storefront with Mirakl Marketplace Platform as the SaaS marketplace orchestration layer, leveraging an API-based approach to connect the two systems. Functional capabilities implemented include seller onboarding and catalog management for third-party vendors, an editorial Seller Stories content module to surface curated lifestyle products, and single sign-on authentication via LDAP to unify customer sessions across Albertsons properties.
Integrations tied the Mirakl Marketplace Platform and Magento Commerce to Albertsons back-end systems and external services, including the J4u customer loyalty platform, CSP security controls, Adobe Dynamic Tag Management for analytics instrumentation, Stripe for payment processing, and Avalara for tax and rating. The marketplace was deployed to operate alongside Albertsons’ core e-commerce running on HCL Commerce ex IBM WebSphere Commerce, with the Mirakl and Magento approach chosen because the team concluded the WebSphere path would take substantially longer and cost more.
Governance and operational rollout emphasized rapid seller onboarding and localized storefront branding, the marketplace presenting as Acme, Safeway, or Albertsons depending on user location. The site was designed as an experimentation and discovery layer, enabling customers to recommend products and allowing high-performing marketplace items to be considered for placement in the main supermarket assortment.
Albertsons launched the Mirakl Marketplace Platform in mid-October 2018 after a four month development cycle. McFadyen Digital estimated the Mirakl approach saved Albertsons at least hundreds of thousands of dollars and six to eight months of additional development, and the implementation reported ongoing growth in onboarded sellers and SKUs while improving product discovery for younger customer segments.
