1-800-Flowers.com | Retail | 4000 | $1.8B | United States | IBM | IBM PowerHA SystemMirror | Application Performance Management | 2004 | n/a |
In 2004, 1-800-Flowers.com deployed IBM PowerHA SystemMirror to provide high availability for critical application infrastructure. IBM PowerHA SystemMirror was implemented as part of the company's Application Performance Management strategy to stabilize runtime availability across transactional and ERP workloads.
The deployment centered on PowerHA clustering and SystemMirror configuration across AIX hosts, with design and implementation of node failover, quorum configuration and cluster resource policies. Administration and ongoing PowerHA operations covered AIX 5.2, 5.3, 6.1 and 7.1 platforms in a 24/7/365 production environment, and systems were configured and tested at disaster recovery sites.
Integrations were implemented with DB2 database management and the SAP technology stack, supporting ERP, SCM, BI/BW, PI, EWM, SNC and Solution Manager components, alongside IBM WebSphere Commerce. The implementation supported DB2 9.1 through 10.5 administration and SAP operational activities including database migration, database refresh, performance tuning, kernel upgrades, batch job management and transport control.
Operational governance used SAP Solution Manager to establish System Monitoring, Work Center Administration, Change Management, trace analysis, SMD administration and end to end trace analysis, and included Wily Introscope setup for application level instrumentation. PowerHA administration, design and implantation were integrated with these monitoring and change workflows to coordinate failover testing, system monitoring and business continuity procedures.

Audi | Automotive | 88604 | $70.6B | Germany | IBM | IBM PowerHA SystemMirror | Application Performance Management | 2015 | n/a |
In 2015 Audi implemented IBM PowerHA SystemMirror to provide high availability for mission critical SAP applications, establishing a platform level capability aligned with the Application Performance Management category. The implementation targeted SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business Warehouse workloads and was positioned to support manufacturing logistics, finance, controlling and other enterprise business functions across Audi and affiliated Volkswagen Group brands.
IBM PowerHA SystemMirror was deployed as clustered high availability software across IBM Power Systems servers in two data centers, using IBM PowerVM virtualization to host more than 250 SAP instances and management systems. Configuration included PowerHA clusters for failover and IBM PowerVM Live Partition Mobility to enable maintenance without downtime, together with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications tuned for in memory SAP HANA operation.
The solution integrates directly with SAP S/4HANA, the SAP HANA platform and SAP Business Warehouse, and operates alongside Audi custom manufacturing applications running on IBM AIX with IBM WebSphere Application Server, IBM MQ and IBM Db2 software. Hybrid cloud connectivity was retained for cloud based SAP services such as SAP SuccessFactors, while SVA provided infrastructure as a service and IBM Services delivered ongoing management and operational support under a consolidated service contract.
Governance and rollout emphasized consolidation and standardization of IT operations to streamline procurement and managed services, uniting previously separate Power Systems environments under single operational controls. Reported outcomes from the implemented configuration included reduced physical server count by 66 percent, a 50 percent reduction in database size for SAP Business Warehouse and loading speeds for analytics improved by a factor of 100, demonstrating the availability and performance objectives targeted by Audi using IBM PowerHA SystemMirror.

Balluff | Manufacturing | 3900 | $671M | Germany | IBM | IBM PowerHA SystemMirror | Application Performance Management | 2012 | n/a |
In 2012 Balluff implemented IBM PowerHA SystemMirror as part of a targeted Power platform renewal, deploying the solution within the broader Application Performance Management scope to stabilize and monitor high availability on its IBM Power infrastructure. The deployment aligned with the planned adoption of in-memory computing using DB2 BLU and was executed against two IBM p750 systems, each provisioned with 32 Power 7+ CPUs and 1 TB of RAM, to provide a resilient foundation for production and development sites and the companys SAP and database workloads.
The implementation included the introduction of Dynamic Power Cloud Manager DPCM to simplify Power administration and to automate AIX LPAR lifecycle tasks. DPCM was configured to standardize LPAR profiles, automate creation and tuning workflows, and provide role based access with a viewer role for IT management to surface capacity management and performance graphs. These functional capabilities reduced the need for external tuning support by enabling administrators to perform routine platform maintenance and disk handling autonomously.
Architecturally the environment used IBM PowerHA clustering for platform high availability together with optimizations to integrate with the existing FlashCopy Manager for backup and LPAR cloning workflows. DPCM was employed to orchestrate FlashCopy operations, streamline disk management without deep SAN expertise, and to support rapid disaster recovery through an automated recreate function that can restore LPAR profiles and the AIX operating system to the same or alternate hardware. The topology emphasized holistic Power and LPAR monitoring across Balluffs international production and development sites and its network of branches.
Governance and operational changes were delivered with support from Axians, including a proof of concept that validated faster database response times and demonstrable simplification of administration. Process standardization, automated LPAR provisioning, and consolidated performance monitoring were established as part of the rollout, enabling Balluffs IT department to respond more quickly to changing requirements while maintaining platform stability and availability under the IBM PowerHA SystemMirror Application Performance Management implementation.
