In 2020, Loyalty Partner Solutions migrated its Oracle Siebel CRM environment onto Amazon EC2 to provide Application Hosting and Computing Services for its customer management workloads supporting Payback, bahn.bonus and Miles & More processing. The migration followed a 2019 test phase that validated AWS as capable of meeting the very high performance requirements previously achieved on an on premise Oracle Exadata installation.
The implementation architecture centered on Amazon EC2 i3 bare metal instances using NVMe Instance Store for read-heavy operations and Amazon EBS stripe volumes for write operations, combined with an Oracle-optimized Linux tune and targeted database performance optimizations. NVMe volumes are reinitialized from dump files after restarts to restore warmed reads, and the design segregates storage IO patterns so that all read activity stays on Instance Store while writes persist to EBS. This infrastructure design enabled Amazon EC2 to host the Oracle database tier with performance parity to the physical Exadata target.
Application migration for the broader Siebel landscape was executed in a Lift and Shift pattern, replacing physical F5 load balancers with AWS Application Load Balancers and substituting the classic Windows file server with AWS FSx for Windows. Siebel application servers were integrated with AWS Standard Active Directory Services, including a necessary Active Directory schema extension for Siebel. End to end encryption of intra-application communication channels was implemented during the test phase, adding a security control that had not been present in the on premise deployment.
PROTOS Technologie GmbH led the test environment and migration effort in close cooperation with Loyalty Partner Solutions, due to the inability to re factor the Siebel landscape. The confirmed performance results and successful end to end encryption supported the decision to proceed with the full AWS migration, resulting in Amazon EC2 being adopted for Application Hosting and Computing Services across the Siebel CRM estate.
