In 2019, American Seafoods implemented Access CartaHR, a Human Resources application from Access Information Management, to digitize and centralize crew and employee contract documentation. The HR-focused implementation concentrated on United States operations serving Washington and Alaska, consolidating more than 31,000 pages of contracts for maritime crew and shore personnel into a single managed repository.
Access CartaHR was configured to provide document capture and indexed repository capabilities, onboarding document workflows, searchable metadata, and role-based access controls to support audit and compliance readiness. Functional deployment emphasized digital contract ingestion, metadata indexing for fast retrieval, and automated onboarding document checklists consistent with Human Resources document management practices.
Operational scope included HR teams supporting vessels and shore facilities, with governance aligned to centralized retention and audit workflows to standardize contract handling across sites. The implementation reduced HR administrative time by roughly 35 percent, about 2,000 hours annually, while improving onboarding efficiency, document searchability, and audit preparedness using Access CartaHR.

In 2024, American Seafoods deployed ServiceNow Field Service Management to extend its existing ServiceNow IT Service Management and IT Asset Management footprint and to centralize onshore and offshore operational workflows. The ServiceNow Field Service Management implementation targets crew rotation and vessel turnaround processes across the company’s seven processing vessels and supporting onshore teams, treating crew members as the field force and aligning trip planning with operational schedules and resource constraints.
The implementation configures ServiceNow Field Service Management work orders and work order tasks to model each vessel trip and crew rotation, and leverages a ServiceNow portal and service catalog to provide self-service for routine IT support for both onboard crews and shore staff. Functional modules include incident management driven by the ITSM workflow, IT asset lifecycle tracking from ITAM with visibility surfaced in the ServiceNow CMDB, and FSM scheduling and work orchestration capabilities configured to support season-level planning, budgeting, and resourcing for each trip.
Architecturally the solution consolidates data on the ServiceNow platform, using ServiceNow’s integration tools to synchronize personnel records with the company HR system so that crew assignments and employment details are available in a single secure location. FSM updates can be entered in real time by onshore HR teams or by the Purser or Mate onboard, and data is consolidated in the ServiceNow CMDB to provide unified visibility for vessel managers and IT support teams. HandCloud served as the implementation partner, delivering FSM configuration and demonstrating how FSM maps to American Seafoods’ operational workflows.
Governance and process reengineering accompanied the rollout, with FSM used to formalize collaborative workflows between vessel managers, purser roles, HR, and shore-based operations teams. Crew changes and role assignments are now managed as system-driven events in FSM, supporting compliance reporting needs and enabling simultaneous access to records for the US Coast Guard and internal stakeholders. The project emphasized operational controls, single data model governance, and the extension of asset management practices toward operational technologies.
Explicit outcomes reported include improved visibility and control of distributed IT hardware through ITAM and the CMDB, 24/7 information sharing between onshore and offshore teams, and a reduction in crew update turnaround time from 24 to 48 hours down to minutes for updates made through FSM. The company is also exploring ServiceNow built-in generative AI capabilities to derive further operational insights and to support future sustainability and performance initiatives.
