In 2023 Bayer implemented SAP S/4 HANA as the core system for its finance organization, positioning the deployment within an ERP Financial strategy to consolidate and standardize record to report processes. The S/4 HANA program was executed alongside a parallel adoption of Trintech’s Cadency Platform to address financial close and reconciliation needs that required stronger workflow, auditability, and non-accounting input integration.
The implementation followed a template-driven architecture, with Bayer developing a unified template over approximately 1.5 years that applies across the two productive ERP strands. Division-specific features were introduced only where necessary, and localization projects were used to adapt country-level settings. The rollout began with pilot countries, with a target to transition around 80 percent of global sales to the new systems within three years of completing the template, and a full global footprint covering roughly 90 countries planned across a four to five year horizon, grouping smaller countries into clusters and addressing larger countries individually.
Functionally the landscape paired SAP S/4 HANA core finance capabilities with Trintech’s Cadency Platform to handle balance sheet reconciliations, journal entry workflows, approvals, audit trails, and custom document fields. Bayer documented that its earlier self-developed solution had been integrated with SAP through custom ABAP programs, tables, and a WebDynpro UI, and Cadency was adopted to provide a holistic close platform including recurring entries management and journal entry controls that SAP alone did not address.
Integrations were explicit focal points, Cadency was integrated into the S/4 HANA environment to orchestrate close workflows and to provide traceable input from non-accounting functions via ServiceNow. The overall deployment strategy emphasized minimizing bespoke development inside S/4 HANA, shifting specialized workflow, compliance, and automation requirements into the external Cadency platform while retaining SAP as the transactional backbone for finance.
Governance and process restructuring centered on compliance, transparency, and end-to-end workflow management, including documented approval chains to support audit scrutiny and the four eyes principle. Bayer and Trintech continued their partnership to resolve R2R gaps such as recurring entries workflows and journal entry ID verification, with the stated objective of improving financial close efficiency, compliance, and transparency across country and Global Business Services organizations.

SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central was configured to centralize Core HR records and deliver core employee data services, forming the architectural foundation for payroll and time capabilities and for talent and learning processes. The initiative includes workstreams focused on talent management best practices in SAP SuccessFactors, payroll and time functionality, and consolidation of the learning ecosystem, with targeted process redesign and system configuration aligned to those modules.
Architecturally the deployment emphasizes a cloud-first approach under the RISE program with integration into SAP S/4HANA, and explicit links between Employee Central and payroll/time systems to enable end-to-end HR data flow. Operational scope is global, affecting HR operations, talent management, payroll, learning, and employee experience functions and supporting a centralized HR platform model.
Governance is organized via a transformation roadmap, task forces and multiple workstreams, including a talent management best practices task force run in collaboration with SAP, and programs to transform the operating model into off-shoring solutions while improving employee experience. Bayer SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Core HR rollout is being managed through these governance structures to standardize processes and sequence configuration and deployment decisions.

Architecturally the deployment was implemented on the S/4 HANA CORE platform with orchestration to satellite systems, reflecting a hybrid landscape of central ERP and specialized ancillary systems. Integrations explicitly addressed Order to Cash, Accounts Receivable and FSCM related data flows, with the implementation design acknowledging enabling technologies such as cloud solutions, Machine Learning, AI and predictive analytics as part of the longer term innovation roadmap.
Governance centered on global process ownership, release strategy and functional design authority for Contract to Cash and Bill to Cash process aspects, supported by a global process manager role responsible for process change management and adherence to standardized guidelines. The program emphasized standardized data, configuration governance and KPI reporting for credit, collections and dispute management, with a phased global rollout and coordinated release management as the primary control mechanisms.
