| SAP | Legacy | SAP S/4 HANA | ERP Financial | ERP | Infosys | 2020 | 2022 |
In 2020, Essential Utilities began an enterprise program to centralize finance and operational systems on SAP S/4 HANA, targeting a single system of record for finance across its water, wastewater, and natural gas businesses. The initiative aligned with an ERP Financial consolidation strategy to unify financials, reporting, and cross-functional analytics across the company.
The SAP S/4 HANA implementation covered core financials, plant maintenance, supply chain, human resources, and BW analytics, with planned future rollout of SAP Customer Relationship and Billing for the water-wastewater side. Development of Fiori user interfaces was a notable configuration approach, consolidating multiple native screens into one to two role-based screens to reduce clicks and streamline onboarding and daily tasks.
Deployment and technical architecture evolved from the companys prior SAP footprint, where Peoples Natural Gas had implemented SAP ECC and upgraded to S/4HANA in 2019, followed by a January 2022 conversion of the water and wastewater business onto the SAP S/4 HANA platform. The environment includes an HANA database stack and an in-place HANA upgrade path, with the program tracking an upgrade from version 1809 to a 21 or 22 baseline in a future maintenance window.
Infosys and SAP served as the technical implementation partners, with Grant Thornton engaged for organizational change management, and IT and business leaders executed a nine-month enterprise system rationalization to define a four-year technology roadmap. Program governance emphasized pulling subject matter experts from the business full time onto project teams, rigorous data cleansing prior to cutover, and extensive remote design and testing during the COVID period to maintain schedule while working virtually.
Explicit outcomes to date include company-wide consolidation where Essential Utilities now runs on SAP for financials and a foundation established for subsequent automation and workflow work in accounts payable and vendor portals. The Peoples Natural Gas upgrade was noted as an early North American utility S/4HANA adoption and the program continues with planned HANA platform upgrades and staged functional expansions.

In 2021, Essential Utilities implemented Workday HCM as its Core HR system. Workday HCM was positioned as the companywide HRIS to support employee lifecycle management and HR business processes for Essential Utilities, aligning Human Resources and payroll-adjacent administrative functions across the enterprise.
Configuration focused on Core HR capabilities common to the category, including unified employee records, position and workforce management, organizational modeling, benefits and compensation data structures, and talent management workflows. Workday HCM was also used to maintain operational reporting and to provide HR business partners with the dataset and configurable reports required to track turnover, support investigations, and inform succession planning.
Operational scope emphasized HR Business Partner coverage for Aqua and Peoples operating units, with explicit HRBP responsibility for Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana Aqua employees and Delta Gas employees. The implementation supported labor and union relations workflows, case management for employee complaints and investigations, and collaboration with subject matter experts in Labor Relations, Compensation, Benefits, and Recruiting to resolve workforce issues.
Governance relied on HR business partners working directly with leadership to align staff with business objectives and to embed diversity and inclusion practices into hiring, performance management, and training processes. Workday HCM served as the system of record for HR policy enforcement, reporting, and operational collaboration between HR, business leaders, and talent teams.
