Configuration included issuing rPVC as the default material for new and replacement cards and embedding material selectors into card manufacturing and personalization pipelines, consistent with Card Personalization functional needs. The solution supports card lifecycle activities such as personalization, fulfillment, and material specific production controls to ensure compatibility with recycled substrates.
Rollout coordination was handled through card issuance and fulfillment operations so customers requesting new or replacement cards received rPVC cards first, while existing cards were preserved until natural expiry. Availability varied by country as each market joined the programme, and operational coverage extended across HSBC’s global issuance footprint rather than a single site.
Governance included progressive issuance policies and supply chain sourcing standards to support HSBC Bank USA’s sustainability targets, including a commitment to reach net zero in operations and supply chain by 2030 or sooner and a broader net zero commitment by 2050 or sooner. The migration to recycled PVC under IDEMIA GREENPAY is reported to reduce CO2 emissions by 161 tonnes per year and save 73 tonnes of plastic annually based on HSBC’s current annual card volume.
