In 2020, Iveco Defence Vehicles implemented Altair HyperMesh as its 3D Modeling platform. The deployment supported engineers in the Concept Development and Protection Unit in Bolzano, and it was adopted by the Protection Simulations Team for vehicle survivability engineering.
Configuration work centered on finite element pre processing, high fidelity meshing, and model preparation workflows typical of 3D Modeling platforms, with scripting and automation used to standardize repeated tasks. Engineers developed automated calculation routines for Expected Protection Capability within Altair HyperMesh, and the application was used to author technical models and simulation inputs for terminal ballistics scenarios.
Altair HyperMesh was integrated into the protection simulation chain together with IMPETUS Afea for dynamic impact simulation, forming a linked pre processing and solver workflow for vulnerable area assessment. Operational coverage explicitly includes validation of structural weak areas of military vehicles against STANAG 4569, and the toolset supports test planning and supervision activities carried out by the Protection Simulations Team.
Governance and process changes accompanied the implementation, with new standard work documents produced and a shift toward automated, repeatable validation workflows for protection engineering. Test planning, supervision, and technical documentation practices were restructured to incorporate model based simulation outputs from Altair HyperMesh and to formalize methods for virtual vulnerable area assessment.
The implementation is used for simulation of impact tests in the domain of terminal ballistics, for development of advanced assessment methods using Altair HyperMesh and IMPETUS Afea, and for generation of automated validation calculations used in vehicle protection verification.
