In 2010, Smurfit Kappa implemented Serrala FinanceSuite, an AP Automation application, as an SAP addon to standardize payment and cash management across European affiliates. The initial project for four Smurfit Kappa affiliates in Poland focused on SEPA migration, bank reconciliation and cash forecasting, delivered over nine months with a two consultant engagement.
Serrala FinanceSuite was configured to support core accounts payable flows including payment execution, SEPA file generation and automated bank reconciliation, with cash forecasting capabilities tied to receivables and payables positions. The implementation included integration points to invoice capture processes, leveraging Readsoft Invoice Scanning as part of the finance intake chain and aligning payment workflows to the SAP core model.
The deployment was embedded into the Group SAP Core Model and integrated with SAP FICO and MM financial postings, and operated alongside HanseOrga FinanceSuite components within the finance landscape. A parallel rollout in Sweden was led by the finance team lead through a full life cycle implementation covering 11 legal entities, completed in nine months with a five consultant team, and broader operational support spanned 15 countries with an 11 consultant support roster.
Governance and operational stabilisation included a legal entity merger via the SAP SLO tool, where an interface between the plant controller and the SAP consultant was used to resolve SLO error messages. Ongoing level 2 and level 3 support was provided for the Group SAP Core Model, emphasizing solution ownership for SAP FICO MM, Readsoft Invoice Scanning and Serrala FinanceSuite in multi-country finance operations.

| SAP | Legacy | SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central | Core HR | HCM | n/a | 2015 | 2015 |
In 2015, Smurfit Kappa implemented SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central. The deployment targeted Core HR business functions, consolidating employee master data and organizational management to create a single cloud-based source of truth for personnel records across the organization.
SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central was configured to support core personnel administration, organizational structure and position management, and standard Core HR workflows such as hire to retire and global employee record maintenance. The implementation emphasized role-based security and localized data models to align Core HR data handling with manufacturing HR and compliance requirements.
At the time, Side-by-Side adoption patterns were attracting interest from customers who wanted the innovations of Employee Central while retaining SAP ERP HCM, and packaged integrations for Side-by-Side scenarios had been released with further integrations and UI mash-ups scheduled for 2015. Smurfit Kappa Group was cited among notable adopters of SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central, and the available integration patterns supported hybrid architectures linking cloud Core HR capabilities to on-premise HR landscapes.

| Senseye | Legacy | Senseye PdM | Computerized Maintenance Management (CMMS) | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2020 | 2020 |
In 2020 Smurfit Kappa deployed Senseye PdM at its Norwich Jupiter Road corrugated sheet board plant, embedding predictive maintenance capability within its Computerized Maintenance Management (CMMS) context. Smurfit Kappa is a FTSE 100 company and the Norwich installation was positioned as an initial, scalable PdM proof point to inform a wider roll out across other sites.
The implementation centered on Senseye PdM analytics combined with edge sensors and supporting infrastructure, with hardware and site implementation delivered by Malone Group in conjunction with Omron. Configuration emphasized condition monitoring, automated anomaly detection and failure forecasting workflows tied to asset condition, with user interfaces designed to surface predictive work items for the engineering team rather than reactive tickets.
Integration work connected Senseye PdM to on‑floor manufacturing systems and SAP, and established an effective interface with the site maintenance management processes. Operational coverage focused on the Jupiter Road production lines and the plant engineering and maintenance functions, using plant data streams to drive alerts and prioritized maintenance actions within the Computerized Maintenance Management (CMMS) environment.
Governance changes included simplified engineering workflows and a shift in maintenance planning from condition based checks to predictive interventions, with the implementation documented as an evidence base for broader rollout. Outcomes reported after six months show the system needs time to stabilize and mature, while initial results include simplified workflow for the engineering team, a stronger focus on asset condition and predictive work rather than reactive maintenance, and early signs of improved uptime.
