| Stormshield Network Security | Legacy | Stormshield NGFW | Next Generation Firewall | CyberSecurity | n/a | 2017 | 2017 |
In 2017, University of Cergy-Pontoise deployed Stormshield NGFW as a Next Generation Firewall to secure campus Wi-Fi access. The IT team ran two concurrent projects, one to secure Wi-Fi access using Stormshield virtual firewalls and the other to completely overhaul the Wi-Fi infrastructure and restore campus coverage.
The implementation used a fully virtualized architecture composed of three Stormshield Network Security virtual firewalls, each provisioned with eight virtual CPUs and 32G of RAM, consolidated onto a single physical server. Stormshield NGFW provided the captive portal and access security functions, and the virtualization strategy was explicitly designed so that capacity could be increased by adding an additional virtual firewall, importing the existing configuration, and adding licences.
The deployment was integrated with multiple vendors responsible for the Wi-Fi infrastructure, the core network, and the Wi-Fi, DHCP and DNS controllers, with Stormshield NGFW handling session enforcement and access control at the edge. Operational coverage targeted campus wireless users and the university community, supporting an average of 3,000 simultaneous connections and peaks around 4,000 connections.
Governance and operational processes centralized captive portal and access security under the Stormshield virtual firewall estate and relied on virtual appliance configuration retrieval for scaling and maintenance. System load analysis reported utilization at slightly below half of the platform capacity, and the solution was described as scalable and capable of meeting the university community needs.
