NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Aerospace and Defense 6000 $2.5B United States Amazon Web Services (AWS) Amazon SimpleDB Database Management 2012 n/a In 2012, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory deployed Amazon SimpleDB as a metadata store for image assets in a Media delivery / content-management implementation supporting the Mars Curiosity mission. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Amazon SimpleDB, Media delivery / content-management, image metadata storage and processing coordination defines the relationship between company, application, category, and business function. Amazon SimpleDB was used to persist and index image metadata and to coordinate automated processing pipelines. The implementation centered on SimpleDB as the lightweight, highly available metadata index supporting query and retrieval workflows, with application-level logic to register assets, track processing state, and surface metadata for downstream systems. The SimpleDB implementation was integrated with Amazon SWF for workflow orchestration, EC2 for compute-driven image processing, S3 for raw and processed image storage, CloudFront for global media delivery, and Route 53 for DNS and distribution routing. These integrations positioned SimpleDB as the coordination point between ingestion, compute, storage, and content distribution, enabling automated handoffs across services and deterministic pipeline state management. Operational scope included mission-centric media delivery during the Curiosity landing in the United States, where the SimpleDB-backed metadata store supported automated image processing and scalable public delivery to millions of viewers. The deployment enabled rapid, scalable delivery and automated image processing for the mission, with SimpleDB functioning as the central metadata and coordination layer for end-to-end media workflows.
