In 2022, ANDREW deployed AMD Vivado Design Suite as part of its Electronic Design toolchain to support FPGA engineering at the Faenza, Ravenna IT1001 / IT02 engineering site. The implementation was scoped to development for distributed antenna and small cell wireless systems and aligned with on-site engineering workflows for circuit card bring-up and system-level integration.
The AMD Vivado Design Suite was configured to support RTL design and synthesis, placement and routing, timing analysis and closure, and bitstream generation, with an emphasis on VHDL based RTL and FPGA-based DSP function development. Simulation and verification workflows incorporated Vivado Simulator alongside ModelSim for mixed flow verification, while Matlab driven DSP modeling fed algorithm prototypes into RTL design cycles.
Integrations in practice included handoffs to circuit card development and multi-functional system integration teams, and the design environment was organized around hardware cores and protocols such as Ethernet and JESD204 referenced in engineering requirements. Version control and automation were incorporated through Git and SVN strategies and scripting using Tcl and Python to support repeatable build, regression simulation, and device bring-up sequences across the engineering department.
Governance and process controls emphasized written interface and design specification documents, architecture trade-off analysis based on design requirements, and coordinated verification at device, unit, and system levels. The rollout was centered on the FPGA engineering team, with configuration management and timing closure workflows embedded into cross-functional review and integration activities to standardize FPGA development practice at the Faenza site.
