Target Retail 440000 $106.6B United States In-House Applications ConsenSource Blockchain Platform 2018 n/a
In 2018, Target piloted the in-house ConsenSource blockchain to manage supplier certification and provenance tracking for its paper product supply chain in the United States. ConsenSource is a Blockchain Platform used as a proof of concept for recording certification status and provenance records between standards bodies, certification bodies, and factories, and the implementation was later open sourced under the ConsenSource name. The implementation focused on supply chain and supplier certification use cases, with functional capabilities inferred to include a supplier registry, certificate issuance and verification workflows, and immutable provenance records for paper product lots. ConsenSource was configured to capture certification metadata and create auditable verification events, aligning application behavior with supplier onboarding, certificate lifecycle management, and traceability workflows common to blockchain based supply chain solutions. Deployment was executed as an in house, permissioned blockchain architecture appropriate for controlled data sharing among industry participants, enabling targeted record sharing with standards bodies, certification bodies, and factory sites across the United States. The project began as a mid 2018 proof of concept and was later open sourced to broaden collaboration, with operational scope concentrated on Target procurement and supplier certification functions for paper products. Governance changes included introducing certificate submission and verification workflows into supplier management processes and centralizing provenance records on the ConsenSource ledger to improve transparency across certification parties. The stated outcome was improved traceability and transparency between standards bodies, certification bodies, and factories, and the codebase was released as ConsenSource to enable broader community use.
