In 2020, Allstream implemented PlatformDIGITAL from Digital Realty as part of an Application Hosting and Computing Services deployment to extend its carrier-grade footprint in Chicago and support cross border connectivity between Canada and the U.S. The implementation was driven by Allstream Global Carrier Solutions, reflecting the company s role as a national business communications provider with a 30,000 kilometer fiber network and nearly 600,000 customer connections.
The PlatformDIGITAL deployment concentrated on colocating a dedicated point of presence at Digital Realty s CHI1 facility, 350 Cermak, to host IP Wavelength service suites and extend Allstream s MPLS network and Ethernet reach. PlatformDIGITAL provisioning included access to Digital Realty s dense carrier ecosystem, physical interconnection capacity, and the industrial grade infrastructure of CHI1, which provides multiple fiber vaults, redundant power feeds, and on site generator capacity. The design emphasized carrier neutral interconnection, ability to support wavelength and Ethernet service termination, and the operational host functions typical of Application Hosting and Computing Services.
Operational integration included establishing a direct interconnection between Allstream s existing Printer s Square footprint in Chicago and the new Cermak point of presence, enabling the same high grade redundant IP and wavelength services out of Cermak that Allstream offered elsewhere. This connectivity path reduced the need for point to point circuits routed via Printer s Square for northbound and southbound traffic, and enabled wholesale customers to aggregate services from a single Chicago facility. The deployment specifically targeted north south traffic flows, supporting both inbound connectivity from U.S. carriers into Canada and outbound access for Canadian enterprise customers into the U.S., and enabled over 98 percent reachability of Canadian businesses by U.S. carriers as stated in the engagement.
Governance and rollout were guided by an audit of Allstream s existing footprint and a deliberate network design expansion to create a permanent facility at Cermak, with vendor flexibility in pricing and design cited as a factor in vendor selection and partnership. The implementation delivered explicit business outcomes described by Allstream, including the ability for wholesale customers to offer services at a reduced cost and improved connectivity options for fulfilling carrier requirements across the Canada U.S. boundary.
