In 2021, University of Queensland implemented Workday Absence Management as part of a broader Workday rollout. The deployment positioned Workday Absence Management within the Absence and Leave Management category and centralized absence workflows, leave balances and entitlement visibility across the institution.
The configuration work focused on standard absence and leave capabilities including absence requests, approvals, balances and accrual handling, and reporting for managers and HR. Workday Absence Management was configured alongside onboarding, talent acquisition and workforce administration functional workstreams, with explicit application enhancements flagged under Absence Enhancements and Reporting Enhancements to improve operational visibility and case handling.
Operational coverage extended across faculties, schools, institutes and central teams, with enhancements linked to the UQ Careers site and onboarding flows to streamline casual appointments and candidate experience. The program recorded concentrated usage and change activity since the October 2021 go live, including about 1.2 million logins, almost 1.2 million transactions, over 500 system enhancements and more than 35,000 AskHR enquiries, and it continued to receive product updates such as the Workday Today 2022R2 release on 12 September 2022 which introduced Workday Home Page changes, enhanced search functionality and an Employee Initiated Flexible Work Arrangements process.
Governance and rollout followed a sustained stakeholder engagement rhythm, with fortnightly Workday Feedback and Enhancements meetings involving Faculty Executive Managers, School Managers, Institute Deputy Director Operations and central representatives. Training and adoption materials were delivered through a Systems Training Hub and new dashboards including a General Management Dashboard were released to support managers and HR in operating the Workday Absence Management capability.
