Thames Water | Utilities | 8000 | $3.4B | United Kingdom | SAP | SAP S/4 HANA | ERP Financial | 2020 |
In 2020, Thames Water implemented SAP S/4 HANA to replace SAP ERP ECC 6.0 and establish a new ERP Financial platform aligned to a Microsoft Azure strategy. The programme was positioned as an enterprise level initiative to move finance and core ERP processes onto SAP S/4 HANA while leveraging cloud native capabilities in Azure, requiring automation to realize platform benefits and a modern operating model.
The implementation covered the HANA database layer, the NetWeaver platform and the S4 product stack, and included designs for both SAP S/4 HANA and B/4HANA applications. Delivery focused on a highly configured RedHat SAP HANA cluster on Azure, accompanied by Infrastructure as Code artifacts and deployment code to automate provisioning for database, platform and application tiers.
Thames Water insourced its Cloud team and worked alongside Microsoft, selecting Centiq as the systems integrator to complement in-house skills with HANA, Linux, SAP on Azure and DevOps expertise. Centiq led delivery using a Define, Design, and Build methodology, blending SAP and Azure technical skills to enable rapid environment creation and day to day DevOps orchestration.
Governance and rollout used agile practices with daily reviews and iteration demonstrations, and Phase 1 delivered a four month design and the code to deploy the solution. Following Phase 1, Centiq progressed to Phase 2 to design and build the S/4 HANA and B/4HANA application deployments, championing automation and Infrastructure as Code to deliver SAP S/4 HANA environments in hours rather than weeks, a capability described as a world first for the utilities industry.
