In 2017, Libreria Porrua deployed IBM Power Systems to host SAP ERP and SAP Customer Activity Repository powered by SAP HANA as part of an Application Hosting and Computing Services implementation to improve inventory visibility and reporting across its retail and distribution footprint. The scope covered the retailer’s catalog of roughly 500,000 SKUs, operations across 82 stores including a flagship in Mexico City, three distribution centers, and a headcount of about 900 employees, with the IBM Power Systems environment positioned as the primary compute layer for transactional and analytical workloads.
The technical implementation included SAP ERP, SAP Customer Activity Repository, SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence, SAP Landscape Transformation Replication Server, and SAP Solution Manager running on SAP HANA. IBM Power Systems S824L servers running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications and IBM Power Systems S824 servers running IBM AIX were used to host application tiers, while IBM Storwize V5000 provided primary storage and IBM Spectrum Protect provided backup. Logical partitions were configured to optimize capacity and reduce SAP processor licensing requirements, and the project preserved standard SAP operational patterns for data replication and BI processing.
Integrations and vendor roles were explicit, Hyperflex Technologies acted as the IBM Business Partner and managed the IBM infrastructure implementation with support from IBM Lab Services, and a separate SAP integrator handled the SAP application cutover. Hyperflex Technologies completed the IBM infrastructure work in about four months and the combined SAP go-live was achieved in around six months, with future plans discussed to augment e-commerce recommendation capabilities using IBM Watson. The architecture consolidated sales and inventory feeds from stores and warehouses into the SAP HANA-based repository to enable near real-time stock visibility.
Governance and rollout were executed through joint workshops led by Hyperflex Technologies to train operations on logical partitioning and capacity optimization, and Porrúa provided strategic oversight while the partners performed hands-on implementation. Operational outcomes reported by the customer include a 10% increase in sales year-on-year in 2018, reductions in operating cost through re-allocation of administrative tasks to customer-facing roles, and sales reporting frequency increasing roughly 30 times from monthly to daily, enabling faster replenishment and improved customer fulfillment.
