In 2016, City Of Reykjavik Iceland implemented Siemens Mobility ITS through deployment of Siemens Sitraffic Stream as a satellite based prioritization layer. The deployment targeted Traffic Management in the city center and was established as a shared operational capability with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, initially installed at six intersections to prioritize buses and emergency vehicles. Siemens Mobility ITS was configured to provide signal priority and green light allocation using satellite positioning and vehicle communication, leveraging GPS/GPRS onboard units for vehicle location and priority requests. The implementation combined the prioritization service with existing signal control at selected intersections and used real time vehicle positioning to trigger priority logic, aligning with typical Traffic Management functional workflows for signal priority and transit punctuality. The rollout was delivered in cooperation with local partner Smith & Norland Iceland, with governance coordinated between the City of Reykjavík and the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration to manage operational rules for buses and emergency vehicle priority. Outcomes reported with the implementation included improved punctuality for public transit and reduced CO2 emissions in the city center, reflecting the system focus on prioritized signal control for public service vehicles.
