In 2018, BBC Studios implemented SAP S/4 HANA Finance as an ERP Financial initiative to align group finance operations and reporting. The SAP S/4 HANA Finance deployment was coordinated with BBC Global News Ltd GNL during a 12 to 18 month programme of change following the integration of three businesses, with particular emphasis on supporting a global commercial news operation of roughly 350 employees across 12 countries.
The implementation focused on core finance capabilities, aligning SAP S/4 HANA Finance configuration to support management reporting by product and geography, month end close workflows, budgeting and transaction processing, and financial controls. Configuration work emphasized general ledger posting standards, intercompany transaction flows, accounting period management, and role based controls to standardize month end and budgeting processes across BBC Studios and GNL.
Integrations were scoped to ensure alignment with BBC Studios SAP platform project team and with other core Budget and Reporting tools, including detailed reviews of system interfaces and transaction flows. The programme assessed the implications for finance system configuration and information exchange across regions and considered options for centralizing transaction processing into a shared service centre, with particular attention to UK and India operating model choices.
Governance and operational change were explicit parts of the programme, with a dedicated finance transformation lead reporting to the COO of GNL and liaising with the CFO of BBC Studios and the SAP platform project team. The role included reviewing finance operating model options, leading implementation of a Career Path Framework within the finance function, and providing direction to GNL’s global finance team to standardize processes and controls.
