SAP Digital Manufacturing was used to eliminate manual paper inputs, digitize work-instruction verification, and capture machine-to-machine exchange events, supporting strict validation and documentation needs typical of medical and precision manufacturing.
Architecturally the solution used SAP Business Technology Platform as the technical foundation for workflow management, auditing, and integration services, while SAP Digital Manufacturing connected directly to shop-floor equipment and the SAP ERP production order layer. Implementation partner Syntax built required custom applications on SAP BTP and Deloitte provided program and vendor management guidance, with SAP Services and Enterprise Support used for validation and operational readiness.
Governance and rollout were structured around a proof of concept at Carl Zeiss Meditec, followed by a scaled roll-out program with 29 rollouts planned and an approach that packages a fully tested and documented solution monthly, including validation at the end of every sprint. The program explicitly addressed release governance and staying validated through new releases to meet regulatory obligations, and operational coverage targeted production lines and manufacturing operations to improve traceability and operational transparency.
The project produced explicit operational outcomes reported by the organization, including near total elimination of printed digital history record printing and printed work-instruction verification for the first rollout, a reported increase in rollout parallelization from three to ten, and improved ability to analyze scrap and energy use through digitized production data. These outcomes supported the stated business functions of manufacturing execution, quality and regulatory traceability, and operational planning.
