In 2018, Agero implemented Apptio Cloudability to provide Cloud Cost Management as part of its migration to Amazon Web Services. The deployment was intended to deliver visibility and governance as workloads transitioned to AWS, aligning technology, business and finance around cloud spend and operational cost controls.
Agero configured Apptio Cloudability with a core user group, curated dashboards, and a formal tagging policy to classify resources and attribute costs. The implementation leveraged Apptio Cloudability features such as the True Cost explorer, budgeting and cost views, and the RI Planner to analyze AWS detailed billing data and inform Amazon EC2 Reserved Instance purchasing decisions.
Apptio Cloudability ingested AWS billing artifacts including detailed DBR and CUR level data to surface anomalies and enable faster detection of accidental overprovisioning. Integration scope explicitly included AWS, Azure, and GCP billing ingestion and normalization to create a single multi-cloud view. Operational coverage spanned engineering, DevOps, and finance teams who accessed shared cost and utilization data to reconcile consumption, run showback, and trace spend down to individual customers or teams. Bitmovin used Business Mappings to monitor custom pricing rules and to categorize spend to individuals or cost centers, improving cross-functional collaboration on cloud unit economics.
Governance and operational changes focused on tagging discipline, automated allocation rules, and democratizing access to cost insights. Within the first two months of deployment Bitmovin identified and shut off forgotten Dev and Test instances, realizing significant savings, and then progressed to rightsizing and commitment strategy planning. Planned next steps documented during rollout include extending deep tag coverage to GCP, implementing multi-cloud budget planning and forecasting with Apptio Cloudability, and broadening access and showback to further embed FinOps practices.

In 2018, Coles implemented Apptio Cloudability, a Cloud Cost Management solution, to establish disciplined financial governance as the retailer accelerated a migration of workloads to Microsoft Azure. The adoption of Apptio Cloudability began day one of the cloud program to provide cost visibility as Azure billing exports refreshed, enabling cost attribution to general ledger codes in near real time and supporting a target to exit the data centre for 85 percent of existing workloads.
Implementation focused on programmatic cost classification and tagging governance, Coles enforced a tagging standard at the Azure resource group level and used subscription-level fallbacks to ensure every cost could be attributed to an official cost centre. Apptio Cloudability’s Business Mapping capability was configured to represent Coles’ business rules so costs are automatically classified on each Azure billing refresh, and curated financial dashboards were prepared for cost centre views to make cloud cost reporting actionable for nontechnical stakeholders.
Operational coverage included over 170 teams and roughly 100 Azure subscriptions, with Cloudability integrated into the Azure billing export pipeline to drive continuous classification and GL mapping. The move to Azure also included high‑scale compute use cases, notably migrating data science workloads to Azure Batch where Coles instantiates and tears down about 800 machines for hourly processing runs, and Cloudability provided cost validation for those large, transient compute cycles.
The initiative was paired with an IT finance transformation and a broad education and enablement program, shifting capitalisation rules toward R&D only while treating other cloud costs as OpEx to realign governance and incentives. Coles used Apptio Cloudability to operationalise cost ownership, increase stakeholder sensitivity to untagged costs, and prepare for a subsequent rollout of ApptioOne to extend IT financial management beyond cloud cost visibility.
