In 2019, Banca d'Italia deployed McAfee Total Protection as part of its Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tooling to strengthen endpoint and data protection. McAfee Total Protection was configured alongside McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator to centralize endpoint management, policy enforcement, data protection controls and compliance reporting across the bank's IT estate.
The implementation architecture integrated McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator for policy and rule distribution with RSA NetWitness Platform for monitoring, analysis and incident response, using telemetry from servers, endpoints and network security devices. Event sources explicitly included IDS and IPS sensors and corporate firewalls, feeding offenses and alerts into RSA NetWitness for triage and context enrichment before SOC action.
Operationally the project supported SOC layer 1 functions, focusing on collection and initial screening of data and event traffic from the IT ecosystem, first level analysis of RSA-generated offenses to determine incident versus false positive, and escalation to layer 2. Trouble ticketing and escalation workflows were executed through BMC Remedy, providing a defined handoff from SOC triage to downstream incident response and remediation teams.
Governance was implemented through rules, policies and documented mitigation procedures, with real-time guidance on device configuration and network traffic monitoring supplied to operations. The deployment linked McAfee Total Protection and Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) capabilities directly to security operations, incident response, endpoint management and compliance functions within Banca d'Italia.
