Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) | Government | 612 | $106M | United States | NetApp | NetApp SnapMirror | Data Replication | 2019 | n/a |
In 2019, the Environment and Natural Resources Division implemented NetApp SnapMirror as part of a Data Replication solution to move and synchronize 300TB of backed up litigation support data into the cloud. The implementation addressed the DOJ division's need for secure, fast, and continuous access to large volumes of unstructured evidence used by attorneys and paralegals during prosecutions.
The technical architecture centered on NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP with a virtual NetApp controller instantiated in Microsoft Azure, using NetApp SnapMirror snapshot based replication to transfer and keep datasets current. Azure NetApp Files was used for cloud storage and NetApp OnCommand Cloud Manager provided a unified web interface to present and manage NetApp controllers both on premises and in the cloud. NetApp Professional Services provided onsite engineering to accelerate the physical move into an Equinix swing space and to validate the replication workflow.
Operational execution staged the environment by relocating on premises hardware into an Equinix interim facility, initiating SnapMirror replication from the on premises controller to the Azure virtual controller, validating snapshots and data integrity, and then connecting directly to Azure before decommissioning the Equinix interim site. The configuration preserved continuous access for litigation teams, allowed reverse replication back to on premises if needed, and maintained consistent controller presentation so cloud storage behaved like an on premises NetApp controller.
Rollout and governance were completed on a compressed two month timeline, driven by a small IT staff requirement for a simple, low maintenance solution and by security requirements for evidentiary data. The deployment produced explicit outcomes reported by the division, including improved security compared with other storage options, a simplified management interface, elimination of prior data corruption issues, and the ability to close the physical data center on schedule.

In 2020, myBrand implemented NetApp SnapMirror as part of a MetroCluster deployment to address rapid growth and reduce administrative burden. The deployment targets the Data Replication needs of myBrand's SAP service platform across three regional offices in the Netherlands and supports the company objective to expand its customer base while maintaining high customer satisfaction.
The architecture centers on NetApp MetroCluster running NetApp ONTAP 9.x integrated into a Fujitsu FlexFrame infrastructure, with ProLion ClusterLion providing automatic failover orchestration of cluster services. NetApp SnapMirror was configured alongside NetApp SnapCenter and SnapCreator for coordinated snapshot orchestration and SnapVault for longer term retention, delivering synchronous replication between two sites and a near real time copy of primary storage.
Integrations explicitly included Fujitsu FlexFrame compute and management, Cisco networking, SUSE operating systems and KVM virtualization as the infrastructure stack, with Fujitsu as the implementation partner. The NetApp stack was integrated with SAP HANA backup workflows so snapshot and replication operations are logged within the SAP HANA database, and administrators use ONTAP management to virtualize and expand storage and application volumes centrally.
Operational governance and process changes emphasized non disruptive maintenance and automated disaster recovery workflows, eliminating prior multi weekend shutdowns that required large teams. myBrand retained the same number of administrators while scaling capacity due to automation, and the organization conducts an annual live disaster recovery test of the MetroCluster environment to validate failover and business continuity.
Documented benefits include on the fly non disruptive maintenance, zero touch automatic failover, robust redundancy with 100% data protection and 0% data loss, reduced administrative overhead and vast storage space savings through deduplication, compression and compaction. myBrand plans to extend the implementation into public cloud by adding Cloud Volumes ONTAP and Azure NetApp Files and to grow MetroCluster capacity on SSD and flash, with initial Cloud Volumes ONTAP tests and a first customer migration already completed.
