Fresenius Digital Technology | Professional Services | 1000 | $120M | Germany | USU Solutions | USU Discovery | IT Service Management | 2020 | n/a |
In 2020, Fresenius Digital Technology implemented USU Discovery to support a group-wide Software Asset Management initiative within the IT Service Management category. The project addressed a fragmented, decentralized IT footprint where many assets could not be accessed automatically and relations between clusters, physical machines, and virtual hosts were maintained by manual data collection that produced only snapshots of the environment.
The deployment centered on the USU Software Management suite with Discovery powered by Raynet, and included USU License Management and SAM Analytics to create sustainable and transparent SAM processes. The implementation followed a proof of concept focused on Microsoft 365, then progressed to full Discovery rollout, with configuration for data and quality management, multi-client capability, and individual dashboarding for internal customers. USU Discovery was configured to support license reconciliation, asset inventory normalization, and KPI reporting workflows.
Raynet and HiSolutions AG supported the discovery strategy and operationalization, and the project team developed a SAM Data Hub that serves as a central platform for data collection 2.0. Integrations and process design emphasized automated discovery across isolated networks, including production and hospital environments, and the solution was tuned to preserve flexibility while minimizing manual interventions. The result is a single data model that consolidates device types, devices, software, and hardware for downstream SAM analytics.
Project governance introduced standardized SAM processes, quality gates, and customized reporting for internal stakeholders, guided by the project manager Oliver Hartmann and supported by USU and partners. According to project documentation, automation reduced manual processes by 50 percent and enabled the delivery of meaningful, individualized KPI reports to internal customers, while the SAM Data Hub and multi-client features provided extensibility for ongoing operational management.

Haufe | Professional Services | 2650 | $610M | Germany | USU Solutions | USU Discovery | IT Service Management | 2017 | n/a |
In 2017, Haufe implemented USU Discovery as part of an IT Service Management initiative. The deployment followed a Proof of Concept in November 2016 and produced a full license overview within two months, enabling rapid operational use of the USU platform. The implementation leveraged USU Software Asset Management modules including License Management, Discovery, USU Managed Services, SAM Consulting and Audit Support, and SAM Training Sessions.
License Management was configured to record Microsoft license entitlements using relevant license metrics and to update usage daily, ensuring accurate allocation for Microsoft products. The Discovery component populated device inventories and captured device details such as BIOS versions and main users, and the platform was configured to calculate complex metrics for servers, clients, mobile, and cloud across major vendors including Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, and SAP. Managed Services and Audit Support were deployed to operationalize reconciliation workflows and ongoing license governance.
The project included a redesign of Active Directory and connecting and monitoring cloud portals to improve data quality and identity reconciliation across the Haufe Group and its 19 branches worldwide. Service desk workflows were integrated with USU Discovery output so agents gained device details, main user attribution, and BIOS information, which standardized license consumption and simplified employee on and offboarding. Operational coverage extended across IT, legal, procurement, and HR functions responsible for compliance and entitlement management.
A License Manager position was established in 2017 and a cross departmental project team of up to 10 employees was formed, including a Project Manager who also acted as License Manager, a Senior Developer, Legal Counsel, Requirements Engineer, Process Manager, and Technical Lead. USU participated as implementation partner and provided a Technical Consultant, a Project Consultant, and a Service Technician during rollout. After go live the Haufe Group obtained a clean overview of licenses and usage, achieved a high degree of maturity in license management, improved data quality from the Active Directory redesign, and ensured daily availability and accurate allocation of Microsoft licenses to support compliance.

Metro | Distribution | 100000 | $30.0B | Germany | USU Solutions | USU Discovery | IT Service Management | 2016 | n/a |
In 2016, METRO AG implemented USU Discovery to establish a centralized IT asset management capability across the group, with the explicit goal of creating a complete view of hardware, software, user and license data. The implementation was positioned within IT Service Management to consolidate inventory sources and provide a foundation for software use optimization, risk assessment and operational efficiency.
The project deployed the USU Software Asset Management solution with Discovery as the initial intake mechanism, ingesting high quality inventory data via reports and connectors to various source systems. License Management was introduced in parallel, and optimization modules were applied for major software manufacturers including SAP, Oracle, IBM and Office 365, enabling automated reconciliation of entitlements against inventory and curated license position reporting.
Integrations were executed to pull HW and SW data from multiple source systems, producing over 60 dashboard reports that consolidate hardware and software metrics into a single pane of glass. The solution supplies up to date balance sheet data and continuous compliance monitoring, extending operational coverage across METRO AG group sites and supporting IT, procurement and finance workflows that rely on accurate asset and license data.
Governance shifted toward a centralized data model where the USU Discovery implementation reduced manual reconciliation work and institutionalized license optimization processes. The centralized solution minimizes manual effort and helps to significantly reduce software costs, while maintaining continuous compliance and providing actionable asset data for enterprise decision making.
