Cash Converters | Retail | 900 | $271M | Australia | Microsoft | Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics | Data Warehouse | 2020 | n/a | In 2020, Cash Converters implemented Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics. The deployment targeted a Data Warehouse consolidation to centralize transactional and customer finance data across the retailer's more than 700 stores in 16 countries and its online channels, driven by a push from the company data science lead and a desire to leverage pay as you go consumption models after running an Azure SQL based warehouse. Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics was configured to ingest nightly data extracts and to provide a unified analytics layer for operational reporting, credit risk assessment, and predictive modelling. The implementation focused on pipelining and data orchestration capabilities, enabling dataset refreshes and queryable analytics without lengthy infrastructure provisioning. The team retained machine learning on the roadmap while using Synapse for current analytical workloads. Data ingestion streams into the Data Warehouse from retail outlets, online sites, and operational systems, consolidating roughly 1.5 million store transactions per year and a customer base of approximately 200,000 personal finance customers, with the total warehouse footprint reaching up to 7 terabytes. Connections to Synapse were described as straightforward to add, and the internal pipelining moved data into the analytics layer on a nightly cadence to keep management reporting current. Operational scope included retail operations, personal finance and loan origination, and executive management reporting, with Synapse supporting buying and selling workflows and ongoing loan management processes. Governance emphasized enterprise wide transparency so managers and senior executives could access consistent datasets for decision making, and data science led the configuration of analytics and predictive modelling pipelines. The migration from Azure SQL to Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics was completed in a few weeks and was reported as simple to deploy, configure and use, enabling faster access to insights and more efficient data pipelining. Cash Converters characterizes the work as already benefiting business and customers, with further machine learning driven retail and location optimisation use cases planned for future phases. | |
