In 2014, Lionsgate implemented Microsoft Power BI to advance its Analytics and BI capabilities across OTT, TV, Theatrical, and home entertainment business functions. The initiative established an enterprise big data center of excellence and centralized management and sourcing of teams responsible for big data architecture and analytics.
The implementation used a multi source big data warehouse architecture, built on Microsoft PDW/ASP/redshift, ingesting iRights, IPM, MediaMorph, DEG, foresight, comScore, BPC, RenTrak, SAP, and RedBox datasets. Microsoft Power BI was configured alongside proof of concept evaluations with MicroStrategy, Information Builders, RSG, and Tableau to support rights management reporting systems, TV sales avails proofs of concept, executive sales and marketing dashboards, and OTT reporting including churn, acquisition, and retention analytics.
Integrations included social media and streaming telemetry, collecting Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube data for real time worldwide social media sentiment, share of voice, and intent to watch reporting. The TV Sales BI system reported off SAP and iRights contract data, and OTT player and subscriber data management fed dashboards for ivod, cvod, svod, and avod reporting. The program also incorporated B to B recommendation engine evaluations and POCs to inform discovery and personalization workflows.
Governance and operational rollout emphasized developing and maturing a data driven culture, cultivating and supporting enterprise self service and agile BI, and planning cross functional reporting through sustained engagement with theatrical, home entertainment, OTT, TV, and marketing teams. The workstream included hiring data scientists and BI analysts in Southern California and designing social media data mining collaborations to align analytics delivery with business reporting needs.
