Anglo American | Oil, Gas and Chemicals | 55000 | $36.0B | United Kingdom | Optalert Limited | Optalert | Fatigue Management | 2024 | n/a |
In 2024 Anglo American implemented Optalert Fatigue Management to enhance operator monitoring across its mining operations. Optalert uses proprietary Johns Drowsiness Scale scoring and industrial grade glasses with a 500 fps sensor that tracks eyelid movements to quantify impairment from full alertness through to extreme drowsiness.
The deployment focused on wearable sensor hardware for vehicle operators and mobile workforce coverage, extending to light vehicle and underground operator use consistent with modern fatigue monitoring patterns. Optalert was provisioned to deliver real time eyelid movement detection, Johns Drowsiness Scale scoring at the operator level, and immediate operator alerting when thresholds are reached.
Configuration included device provisioning, on device signal capture and scoring, and a centralized management console for safety teams to view event logs and operator status. Functional capabilities implemented are continuous eyelid monitoring, alert generation, operator state scoring, and audit logging to support site safety reviews and incident investigations.
Operational integration concentrated on embedding Optalert into site safety workflows, fleet oversight, and contractor management, with a phased pilot followed by scaled site rollouts and supervisor training. Governance updates included new standard operating procedures for fatigue response and data handling protocols to align Optalert telemetry with Anglo American safety processes.

BHP | Oil, Gas and Chemicals | 91304 | $51.3B | Australia | Optalert Limited | Optalert | Fatigue Management | 2022 | n/a |
In 2022, BHP implemented Optalert to strengthen operational Fatigue Management within its safety programs. Optalert is a Medical Technology company that pioneered blepharometry and developed the Johns Drowsiness Scale, the only scientifically proven objective measurement of drowsiness used in Optalert’s early-warning drowsiness detection systems.
The implementation centered on Optalert’s blepharometry-based sensing and the Optalert algorithm that quantifies cognitive deterioration into Johns Drowsiness Scale scores for real-time monitoring. Functional capabilities deployed include continuous eyelid movement monitoring, real-time JDS scoring, and early-warning drowsiness detection driven by Optalert’s algorithm and AI research into neurological biomarkers, with the Optalert platform intended to feed operational alerting and fatigue risk workflows.
Operational governance placed the Optalert solution inside BHP’s fatigue risk management processes, introducing procedural controls for monitoring, alerting, and supervisory escalation tied to JDS thresholds. Optalert’s technology is used worldwide in research and safety systems to protect thousands of lives and valuable company assets, and the Optalert deployment for Fatigue Management aligns BHP with that established scientific and operational framework.

BIS Industries | Oil, Gas and Chemicals | 1000 | $412M | Australia | Optalert Limited | Optalert | Fatigue Management | 2014 | n/a |
In 2014 BIS Industries implemented Optalert for Fatigue Management at its Gunnadah NSW operation. The deployment coincided with BIS taking the coal haulage contract supporting transport from the Tarrawonga and Rocglen mines to the Whitehaven CHPP, and targeted driver safety and haulage operations.
The implementation comprised vehicle installations on 30 Scania R560 prime movers and 3 light vehicles, and provisioning of Optalert driver-worn glasses to more than 65 drivers. Configuration emphasized continuous fatigue detection capabilities typical of Fatigue Management systems, centered on ocular monitoring and real-time driver state detection through the Optalert glasses and vehicle-mounted hardware.
Operational coverage was scoped to the Gunnadah site fleet and coal haulage function, with the system applied across drivers assigned to the contracted routes. The deployment narrative records the specific fleet and user counts, aligning the Optalert application with frontline transport and driver safety operations rather than back office functions.
Governance and rollout were driven by BIS Industries vision of Zero harm, with the project tracked from February 2014 and noted as ongoing. Rollout practices included mandatory fitting of Optalert glasses for assigned drivers and fleet-level hardware provisioning, embedding Fatigue Management capability into operational safety processes.
