In 2021, City of Cape Town implemented SAP Enterprise Asset Management as part of a January 2021 to July 2021 Water and Sanitation master data and GIS integration project PN00494 with Open Source Intelligent Solutions as the SI partner. The deployment targeted Enterprise Asset Management functions for the City of Cape Town Water and Sanitation business function and included a formal project timeline and cut over activities leading to go live readiness in mid 2021.
The implementation of SAP Enterprise Asset Management encompassed core SAP EAM configuration and master data workstreams, including creation of master data templates for functional locations, equipment, task lists, maintenance plans, maintenance items and work centers. Functional configuration work included creation of new catalogs, code groups and codes, definition of object types for feature classes, and development of configuration guidance based on system settings. Data migration activities used conversion programs and LSMW to load SAP PM master data, and the team developed Functional Specification Documents for RICEFW requirements and variants for standard reports to support Fiori tile development.
Integration work explicitly included integration of SAP EAM with an ESRI GIS system, and cross‑module coordination with FI consultants to develop a financial key for assets, ensuring asset master data supported both maintenance and financial workflows. Operational coverage was focused on Water and Sanitation and involved daily sprint meetings, weekly business status meetings, user training sessions, and post go live support planning. Role and authorization controls were formalized through a role matrix, with roles created and tested as part of the deployment.
Governance and quality assurance activities included development and execution of unit, integration, performance and user acceptance test scripts, defect handling through a test management tool, regression testing and performance testing, and master data governance for technical assets. The project delivered cut over processes, coordination of transports to production, system documentation and handover to the business, and provided ongoing support and recommendations to align the SAP EAM and GIS integration with City of Cape Town operational processes.
