In 2021, the City Of Hamilton implemented Cohesity DataPlatform as a Backup as a Service (BaaS) solution to stabilize enterprise backup and recovery across its two data centers and virtualized infrastructure. The City of Hamilton IT organization supports more than 75 public services and was protecting roughly 600 servers and 300 TB of production data, operating a VMware stretch cluster between data centers and fiber channel connected SAN storage, which framed the deployment scope and availability requirements.
The implementation deployed Cohesity DataProtect appliances in each data center and used Cohesity Helios to provide a single pane of glass for cluster management and automated infrastructure operations. The deployment leveraged Cohesity platform capabilities including global deduplication and compression, SpanFS file system features, Change Block Tracking for efficient incremental backups, and native support for file and object services, security monitoring, and dev and test use cases. Cohesity was provisioned through an HPE validated hardware solution using HPE DL360 servers and integrated with the city environment for both on premises consolidation and native cloud mobility.
Cohesity was initially used to address scalability and throughput issues that the city experienced with its prior Veeam backups by acting as a Veeam repository and then by running Cohesity DataProtect natively across clusters. The solution interoperated with the city VMware environment and aligned with planned HPE Nimble primary storage replication between data centers. The IT team also evaluated long term retention strategies for public cloud versus tape and is considering an Infrastructure as a Service provider to host Cohesity for S3 compatible objects to meet Canada data residency requirements.
Operational governance was centralized through Cohesity Helios to deliver global visibility and ransomware detection by monitoring backup data change rates, and the city configured multi cluster management to enable potential multi tenant use for independent agencies within Hamilton. The rollout enabled consolidated management and reduced the need for disparate backup tooling and third party storage, simplifying backup operations and incident response workflows across data center operations and application owners.
