Waitrose & Partners | Retail | 49600 | $7.7B | United Kingdom | ORTEC | ORTEC Advanced Scheduling | Advanced Planning and Scheduling | 2015 | n/a | In 2015, Waitrose & Partners implemented ORTEC Advanced Scheduling to reorganize its home delivery operations. The deployment is categorized as Advanced Planning and Scheduling and targeted planning, routing, and customer time slotting for online grocery deliveries. ORTEC Advanced Scheduling was delivered through ORTEC Time Slotting and Planning solutions combined with a scalable cloud time slotting optimization service. The solution was applied to improve routing efficiency, reduce kilometers and CO2 emission, and expand customer-facing delivery slot availability. The implementation optimized a fleet of 1200 vans servicing roughly 2500 routes each day, operating from 185 branches and three large Customer Fulfillment Centers. The routing architecture uses a hybrid routing and time slotting engine that performs complex along-the-road calculations rather than simple postcode lookups. Time slots and associated delivery prices are calculated dynamically using actual orders and forecasted bookings, enabling near real-time slot availability for online customers. The engine updates slot availability in response to order basket changes or slot changes. Functional modules implemented include Time Slotting, Route Planning and Scheduling, and dynamic slot availability updates tied to order modifications. ORTEC Advanced Scheduling calculates delivery slots in a fraction of a second for Waitrose.com, supporting late order placement and same-day order changes. This capability increased service flexibility and shifted order cutoffs later in the day. Time slotting optimization is provided as a scalable cloud service and integrates with ORTEC’s enterprise level advanced planning solutions to unify routing and planning workflows. Operational coverage spans online customer interactions, branch level dispatch planning, and Customer Fulfillment Center scheduling, supporting the business areas Planning & Forecasting and Routing & Loading. The implementation delivered greater visibility into routes and enabled more detailed analysis of delivery performance and capability. Governance focused on automated availability rules and real-time slot inventory updates, which restructured workflows toward automated scheduling decisions at point of sale. Since deploying ORTEC Advanced Scheduling, Waitrose increased the number of delivery slots available to online customers without increasing its fleet size, gained greater real-time visibility, obtained more insight into delivery performance and capability, and achieved significant time savings. | |
