Action Nederland | Retail | 65000 | $23.0B | Netherlands | ORTEC | ORTEC Routing Suite | Transportation Management | 2016 | n/a |
In 2016, Action Nederland implemented ORTEC Routing Suite. The ORTEC Routing Suite was deployed to strengthen Transportation Management capabilities for logistics planning and route control within Action Nederland.
The implementation centered on ORTEC Routing Suite modules for route optimization, vehicle and driver planning, scheduling and time window management, and automated planning algorithms configured to local operational constraints. Configuration activities emphasized parameter tuning, scenario simulation and batch planning to reduce manual schedule adjustments and to automate recurring routing decisions.
Deployments followed an iterative, project-based approach with on-site configuration, installation, testing and go-live activities, supported by consultants working at customer locations across the Benelux region and ORTEC offices in Zoetermeer and Boortmeerbeek. Technical work involved integration with customer operational databases and ETL feeds, leveraging SQL-based data interfaces to load orders, addresses and fleet data into planning workflows for ORTEC Routing Suite.
Operational scope covered logistics and planning teams across Action Nederland in the Netherlands and neighboring Benelux sites, with governance organized around phased project milestones, local subject matter experts and a mentorship model for implementation consultants. Stated objectives of the implementation included delivering greater control over route planning, reducing staff workload, lowering operational cost and reducing the ecological footprint.

Agrifirm Group | Consumer Packaged Goods | 3077 | $2.3B | Netherlands | ORTEC | ORTEC Routing Suite | Transportation Management | 2010 | n/a |
In 2010, Agrifirm Group implemented ORTEC Routing Suite to automate vehicle routing and dispatch as part of an initiative driven by changes to its carrier payment structure. The deployment addressed a short window rollout requirement, with initial configuration and go live for the Belgian operation completed within six months, leveraging prior operational experience that Agrifirm’s Netherlands region had with Ortec Transport & Distribution.
The implementation centered on Transportation Management capabilities typical of ORTEC Routing Suite, including vehicle routing optimization, dispatch scheduling, trip planning, load consolidation and standardized loading and unloading tariffs. Configuration work included setting automated journey time calculations and driver payment logic, and establishing load utilization targets and constraints to reduce miles driven and provide cost per customer, trip and carrier visibility.
Operational coverage included Agrifirm’s Belgium and Netherlands operations, planners and third party carriers, and the company’s central planning function. Planner Glenn Donckers led operational use and tuning, and the system supported rapid replan and exception handling for driver illness, traffic disruptions and changes to customer requirements. The solution extended governance to haulage partners by producing consistent trip metrics and equalized driver payments, which reduced disputes between drivers and among carriers.
Process and governance changes formalized standardized tariffs for loading and unloading times, automated driver payment rules that do not make exceptions for congestion or weather, and introduced carrier incentive mechanisms tied to load utilization. Planning resource requirements were restructured, moving from a full time planner to an average of two days a month for planning activities, and the company began using outcomes data to encourage carriers to optimize their operations.
Agrifirm reported concrete operational outcomes after deployment of ORTEC Routing Suite and Ortec Transport & Distribution, including a reduction in fleet underutilisation to 17 percent in 2012 and an increase in load utilization from 26.7 to 27.0 tonnes. Reported financial outcomes included an initial saving of around 20K from improved load utilization, loading and unloading related savings of 8K and 30K respectively, and a planning labour cost reduction equivalent to 35K. Additional operational benefits cited included lower diesel consumption and improved driver and carrier relations through standardized, automated planning and payments.

Albert Heijn | Retail | 125000 | $54.6B | Netherlands | ORTEC | ORTEC Routing Suite | Transportation Management | 2015 | n/a |
In 2015, Albert Heijn implemented ORTEC Routing Suite. ORTEC Routing Suite is deployed as a cloud-based Transportation Management solution that computes optimal routing plans continuously for the coming period based on booked orders entered in real time.
The implementation centers on ORTEC’s routing optimizer and fleet-aware planning capabilities, with the engine running constantly to plan weeks ahead and reoptimize as new orders arrive. The routing results are consumed to compute personalized customer delivery time slots, using customer profiles to present feasible and efficient slots at the moment a customer enters the website.
Operational coverage spans Albert Heijn’s online fulfillment footprint, including four fulfillment centers, 20 cross-dock hubs, and a mixed fleet of over 800 vehicles including bikes and vans, supporting roughly 100,000 plus orders per week and six day per week delivery to 86 percent of households in the Netherlands. Order booking feeds and the eCommerce front end are integrated in real time with the routing engine so slot availability and routing plans remain synchronized.
Governance and operational steering use the routing outputs to influence customer choice, steering customers toward efficient and sustainable time slots to reduce logistics miles. The deployment enabled Albert Heijn to achieve significant savings in costs, lower CO2 emissions from logistics miles travelled, and to position operations for future e-commerce growth, and ORTEC and AH eCommerce publicized the network and optimization complexity in a joint explanatory video.
