Allina Health | Healthcare | 28500 | $5.8B | United States | Epic Systems | Epic MyChart | Electronic Health Record | 2023 | KeyCare |
In 2023 Allina Health integrated Epic MyChart as the patient-facing entry point within its Electronic Health Record environment, leveraging Epic Systems for core patient portal and telehealth orchestration and KeyCare as the Epic-based virtualist partner. The deployment situates Epic MyChart at the center of virtual visit scheduling and patient access, aligning the Electronic Health Record application with Allina Health operational footprints that include 12 hospital campuses, 65 primary care clinics, and 14 urgent care centers across Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
The implementation configures Epic MyChart patient portal workflows to accept virtual visit scheduling and to route telehealth encounters into Epic encounter documentation streams. Functional capabilities emphasized include appointment scheduling, telehealth visit initiation, encounter documentation, and secure clinical data access for external virtual providers, consistent with standard Electronic Health Record telehealth modules. KeyCare Virtualist providers complete encounter details on KeyCare’s Epic platform and document care there before information is shared back into the patient record.
Integration architecture relies on Epic-to-Epic interoperability between Allina Health’s Epic footprint and KeyCare’s Epic platform, enabling secure access to a patient’s Allina Health data by KeyCare clinicians and seamless sharing of visit information with the patient’s Allina Health care team. Operational coverage intentionally includes urgent care and virtual care channels, supporting 24 by 7 access including overnight and out-of-state visits, while preserving existing Allina Health clinical workflows and technology boundaries.
Governance and operational control are managed through Allina Health’s Urgent Care, Virtual Care and Convenience Care operations, with implementation designed to augment internal care teams and widen the digital front door without disrupting incumbent systems. Reported outcomes include expanded patient access to telehealth via Epic MyChart, secure cross-organization clinical data sharing with KeyCare Virtualists, and the ability to augment capacity through a nationwide network of Epic-based virtual providers.
