In 2023, Mars engaged Uber Freight as its 4PL provider for North America to deliver Freight Forwarding capabilities for transportation execution and warehouse shipment scheduling. This engagement was embedded within Mars Wrigley’s broader digital supply chain program aimed at improving customer service, reducing costs, and increasing operational agility. Uber Freight was implemented to provide transportation management and visibility functionality, with explicit emphasis on truck loading and route optimization, and scheduling shipments into and out of distribution warehouses. As a 4PL execution partner, Uber Freight’s scope focused on execution-level transport and visibility rather than planning intercompany DC-to-DC shipments. Operationally, Uber Freight sat within an ecosystem that included Kinaxis for demand and supply planning and Aera for short-term sensing and automated decisioning that writes execution recommendations back into SAP ERP. In practice Uber Freight functioned as the transportation execution and visibility layer, consuming execution tasks and contributing status data to Mars’s end-to-end visibility fabric, while ocean freight was managed via the Maersk/E2Open partnership and Europe transport planning used 4Flow. Governance and rollout were driven by the global digital supply chain leadership under Will Beery, which emphasized integrating planning, sensing, and execution workflows and operationalizing automated recommendations. As part of the combined program that included Aera, Kinaxis, and 4PL partners such as Uber Freight, Mars reported truck utilization rising from the mid-80s to over 95% and a 2% improvement in customer service levels in North America, outcomes that reflect the integrated planning, visibility, and execution approach rather than a single component.
