Ambatovy | Oil, Gas and Chemicals | 3000 | $1.0B | Madagascar | IBM | IBM Spectrum Protect (previously IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) | Backup as a Service (BaaS) | 2012 | n/a |
In 2012 Ambatovy implemented IBM Spectrum Protect (previously IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) as its Backup as a Service (BaaS) platform to centralize backup and recovery across its Madagascar datacenter estate. The deployment was scoped to protect core server infrastructure and application stacks deployed across the headquarter, a central office in the capital, the production plant, the mine site, and a designated disaster recovery datacenter.
The implementation configured IBM Spectrum Protect to deliver centralized policy driven backup and restore, tape library integration and virtualization aware protection. Functional capabilities included disk staging to tape workflows for long term retention using an IBM Tape Library TS3310, catalog and restore orchestration, and VM consistent backups for VMware ESX and XenServer hosts that hosted critical workloads.
Integrations were implemented with on premise storage arrays including NetApp and IBM N Series equipment for primary and secondary storage tiers, and with core application infrastructure including Active Directory domain controllers, Exchange cluster servers, a Citrix application farm, SAP application servers, BlackBerry enterprise server and CryptoCard authentication services. Network architecture used fiber optic and UTP links at 1 to 10 gigabit to interconnect sites and support centralized backup streams to the TS3310 tape infrastructure.
Governance and rollout were executed as an enterprise infrastructure project led by the IT systems team, with design and deployment of datacenter layouts, core server and network infrastructure, and coordinated remote site installs. Backup operations were centralized under policy management and scheduled backup jobs to align protection for file services, virtual machines and database servers, while the disaster recovery site design was incorporated into the backup and restore strategy.

Cofares | Life Sciences | 3096 | $4.6B | Spain | IBM | IBM Spectrum Protect (previously IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) | Backup as a Service (BaaS) | 2007 | n/a |
In 2007, Cofares implemented IBM Spectrum Protect (previously IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) as a central Backup as a Service (BaaS) capability for its enterprise infrastructure. The deployment targeted application consistent protection for SAP Basis, file system and database backups on Linux and AIX hosts, and virtualized workloads running on IBM Power systems supporting Cofares operations in Spain.
The implementation used IBM Spectrum Protect client server architecture with agents on SAP application servers and general purpose hosts, and included IBM Spectrum Protect Plus for snapshot oriented protection and virtual machine orchestration. Storage integration was built around IBM arrays including XIV, DS4k, DS8k, V5k, V7k and FlashSystem 900, combined with SAN fabric using Brocade switches and IBM SAN Volume Controller as consolidated backup targets. Backup catalogs and policy based retention were centralized on the Spectrum Protect server tier while PowerVM and Virtual I O Server were used for virtual environment stabilization.
Operational monitoring and storage management were integrated with IBM Tivoli Monitoring, IBM Spectrum Control and IBM Storage Insights to align backup schedules with storage performance and capacity processes. The rollout required coordination between Infrastructure Operations, SAP Basis, Storage and Network teams and included offsite copy connectivity to Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud for extended retention and disaster recovery staging.

Foster Farms | Consumer Packaged Goods | 12000 | $2.5B | United States | IBM | IBM Spectrum Protect (previously IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) | Backup as a Service (BaaS) | 2013 | n/a |
In 2013, Foster Farms implemented IBM Spectrum Protect (previously IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) under a Backup as a Service (BaaS) model to centralize database backup and recovery for its SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server environments. The deployment focused on application-level protection for database workloads and established IBM Spectrum Protect as the primary platform for scheduled backups across heterogeneous operating systems. Foster Farms IBM Spectrum Protect (previously IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) Backup as a Service (BaaS) supported core database business functions including backup scheduling, restore orchestration, and environment provisioning for development and QA refreshes.
Configuration and operational automation centered on recurring backup jobs and maintenance routines, with DBAs setting up full and transaction log backup schedules, statistics updates, and index maintenance in MSSQL. The implementation included configuration and maintenance of SQL Server availability patterns such as AlwaysOn Availability Groups and ongoing monitoring of database mirroring and locking conditions. IBM Spectrum Protect was used in conjunction with established DBA processes to perform backup and recovery tasks, and to support SSRS and SSIS deployments from a protection perspective.
Integrations were explicitly operational with Actifio and IBM Spectrum Protect technologies, providing consolidated backup workflows for Oracle, SAP, and SQL Server across Windows, AIX, and SUSE Linux hosts. The solution supported SAP BASIS activities including system refreshes of application and database stacks to sandbox, development, and QA landscapes, enabling consistent restore and cloning procedures. Coverage extended across enterprise database tiers and SAP application components including ECC, BW, and other managed systems.
Governance placed the Database Administrator team as the operational owner for backup policy configuration, recovery testing, and performance tuning, with responsibilities including troubleshooting SQL Server locking and blocking, and maintaining routine maintenance jobs. Operational processes incorporated scheduled maintenance windows, recovery runbooks, and environment refresh procedures to align backup operations with SAP and database application lifecycles.
