Mitsubishi Australia Automotive 50 $31M Australia SAP SAP Spare Parts Planning Inventory Management 2010 IBM Australia
In 2010 Mitsubishi Australia began implementation of SAP Spare Parts Planning as part of a broader SAP program, addressing parts planning and inventory workflows within the Inventory Management category. The SAP Spare Parts Planning deployment was executed alongside SAP modules for Finance, Procurement, Spare Parts Management, CRM, Warranty Claims Processing, Vehicle Management System, Portal, Business Warehouse and Learning Management Systems. The implementation emphasized structured test governance and quality assurance, with an SAP Test Manager contractor engaged from August 2010 to May 2012 to define and manage System Integration Testing and User Acceptance Testing. Functional capabilities implemented and validated included spare parts planning, Bill of Material processing, procurement flows and finance integration, with test deliverables covering interfaces, migrated data and end to end business scenarios. IBM Australia acted as the SI/VAR for the program and the project included migration activity from an IBM mainframe to SAP ECC6 and a new operational system database OSDB, together with coordinated interface testing and environment data refreshes. Test tooling and test process configuration were formalized, Rational Quality Manager was configured and trained for defect tracking, plans, test cases and scripts, and Rational Requisite Pro was used to map business requirements to test cases. Governance workstreams produced a Master Test Plan, Interface Testing Plan, UAT Test Plan and the System Integration Testing schedule, and selection criteria were defined for automated testing tools to support the transition from project testing to Business as Usual. UAT involved over 50 business participants and included proof of concept exercises and regression testing protocols to support cutover. Outcomes recorded in project documentation include a successful go live on 9 April 2012, Phase 1 completion, and a subsequent go live of SAP Finance, Procurement and Bill of Material into the new OSDB on 15 August 2012 following weekend cutover testing. The program left a configured test management capability in place, with Rational Quality Manager operating in SIT and regression cycles and defined processes for ongoing testing in BAU.
Swiss Federal Railways Transportation 34200 $11.9B Switzerland SAP SAP Spare Parts Planning Inventory Management 2019 n/a
In 2019, Swiss Federal Railways implemented SAP Spare Parts Planning in the Inventory Management category. The initiative was part of SAP's service parts co-innovation work and targeted asset-management-driven spare parts planning across the Swiss rail network in Switzerland. The deployment embedded SAP asset and after sales capabilities and is aligned with SAP Service Parts Planning and related S4HANA aftermarket module functionality inferred from the co-innovation engagement and product announcements. Configuration emphasized service parts planning workflows, parts segmentation and demand-informed replenishment planning, with inventory optimization and planning master data maintained to support maintenance-driven supply requirements. Operational coverage focused on maintenance and depot operations, impacting maintenance planning, inventory control and procurement workflows for spare parts across SBB's network. The program connected asset management objectives to inventory management processes to prioritize parts availability for critical asset classes and maintenance schedules. Governance was conducted through the SAP co-innovation forum, providing a structured feedback loop between SBB maintenance stakeholders and vendor product teams to refine service parts capabilities. The stated business goal was to improve maintenance spare parts availability and reduce unplanned outages across the Swiss rail network.
Vestas Manufacturing 31363 $2.3B Denmark SAP SAP Spare Parts Planning Inventory Management 2024 n/a
In 2024, Vestas began an ongoing transformation of its spare parts and after-sales planning using SAP Spare Parts Planning. The program is focused on Inventory Management for service-parts distribution across the Nordics and Europe, with explicit aims to improve repair-or-buy decisions, inventory balancing and sustainability alignment. The implementation centers on SAP Extended Service Parts Planning, with the SAP Spare Parts Planning application configured to provide service-centric demand forecasting, replenishment planning, allocation logic and repair-or-buy decision support. Configuration work emphasizes multi-echelon inventory planning and safety stock tuning for dispersed service locations, alongside process automation for order proposals and replenishment triggers. Operational coverage is concentrated on after-sales, logistics and parts distribution teams across the Nordics and Europe, and the initiative was presented by Vestas at a joint SAP and Westernacher event. The SAP Spare Parts Planning rollout is positioned to integrate with Vestas core SAP landscape to centralize parts master data and planning outputs for downstream distribution and repair workflows. Governance for the program introduces cross-functional ownership between after-sales, supply chain planning and sustainability stakeholders, and the rollout is being managed as an ongoing program with staged adoption across regional hubs. The stated focus remains on improving repair-or-buy processes, inventory balancing and sustainability objectives rather than on quantified outcomes at this stage.
