Abacus Property Group | Construction and Real Estate | 738 | $184M | Australia | VMware by Broadcom | VMware vSphere | Network Virtualisation | 2013 | n/a |
In 2013, Abacus Property Group deployed VMware vSphere as its core virtualization platform. VMware vSphere was used to deliver Network Virtualisation across primary and secondary sites, forming the foundation for the companys IT operations and disaster recovery architecture.
The implementation centered on a virtual infrastructure design comprising hypervisor hosts and centralized management for VM provisioning and lifecycle control, aligned with common vSphere capabilities. VMware vSphere hosted key Windows Server workloads including Active Directory, Group Policy, WSUS, DNS, DHCP and SQL, and supported Exchange 2013 and Office 365 integration for messaging services.
Integrations were extensive and explicitly documented, with VMware vSphere working alongside Untangle UTM firewall and network infrastructure, DELL SAN storage management, Veeam Backup and Replication, Symantec Backup Exec and Endpoint, Synology NAS storage with Amazon Glacier backups, 3CX telephony systems and MDM controls. Operational coverage included end to end site IT infrastructure across the Sydney Australia footprint and secondary locations, with explicit responsibility for disaster recovery orchestration.
Governance and operational discipline included planning hardware and server migrations, roadmaps and upgrades, technical documentation, disaster recovery management, vendor and licensing oversight, audits and budgeting. The deployment was managed within existing IT operations processes and incorporated server migration planning, AWS scoping and ongoing compliance activities as part of lifecycle governance.

American Red Cross | Non Profit | 19000 | $2.9B | United States | VMware by Broadcom | VMware vSphere | Network Virtualisation | 2017 | n/a |
In 2017, American Red Cross implemented VMware vSphere as the core Network Virtualisation platform supporting its Virtual Workplace digital workspace. VMware vSphere underpins the VMware Workspace ONE deployment that provides centralized access, authentication and delivery for more than 150 applications used by employees and volunteers. The Virtual Workplace leverages VMware Identity Manager for single sign on and serves as the unified catalog for virtual desktops, RDS apps, legacy applications and cloud hosted services.
The implementation combined VMware vSphere in the data center with VMware Horizon Enterprise for desktop and application delivery, VMware App Volumes to decouple application images from operating system images, and VMware User Environment Manager to capture and apply user personalization across 150 applications. VMware Identity Manager functions as the authentication gateway to RDS apps and to cloud applications, while Horizon features such as Instant Clones, Blast Extreme display protocol and Horizon Smart Policies are used to provision non persistent desktops, optimize display and enforce conditional controls. VMware App Volumes was used to reduce image management complexity and enable faster application updates without interrupting users.
Integrations explicitly implemented include Microsoft Office 365, OneDrive and SharePoint for productivity workflows, Concur and SalesForce.com for cloud application access, and UniPrint for printing from Horizon virtual desktops. Operational coverage spans the organization s employees and volunteers supporting field operations, disaster relief and blood services, with more than 10,000 unique users accessing the 150 available apps through Virtual Workplace each day. Running applications from the data center was a deliberate design to guarantee bandwidth and improve responsiveness for field workers in low bandwidth environments.
Rollout began with a soft pilot of about 50 users in October 2015, followed by broad voluntary adoption driven by demonstrations and internal communications rather than mandate. Governance and operational changes included centralized app cataloging and role based access through Identity Manager, user environment standardization via User Environment Manager, and streamlined onboarding workflows that reduced new employee provisioning to under an hour with zero help desk tickets as reported. The organization also planned further endpoint management and identity integration by preparing to deploy VMware AirWatch and adopt Windows 10 mobile management APIs to simplify device enrollment and ongoing management.

American Securities | Banking and Financial Services | 190 | $85M | United States | VMware by Broadcom | VMware vSphere | Network Virtualisation | 2017 | n/a |
In 2017, American Securities implemented VMware vSphere as its Network Virtualisation platform. The deployment was led by the IT Infrastructure & Operations team to virtualize compute resources and centralize core IT systems including network, server, and storage across the corporate environment.
The implementation included a designed and implemented VMware vSphere 8 cluster running on HP servers integrated with Pure Storage arrays, configured to provide virtual machine consolidation, high availability, and storage-aware compute orchestration. VMware vSphere was paired with in-house SolarWinds monitoring to consolidate multiple vendor monitoring platforms, and backup workflows were introduced using Datto for Azure VM and VMware cloud backups, and Commvault Metallic for Microsoft 365 data protection.
Network and operational integrations included Velocloud SD-WAN to optimize internet circuits and increase resiliency for IAAS platforms, and replacement of an MPLS circuit to the Shanghai office with dual internet VPN tunnels to improve site connectivity. The IT team also upgraded Active Directory domain controllers and server OS versions, migrated a cloud based private equity application stack consisting of IIS and SQL back on premises to provide disaster recovery and to reduce cost, and supported an office migration during the Covid period.
Governance and operational controls were formalized through IAAS relationship management and multi-year contract negotiations, annual disaster recovery testing, and coordinated external internal and external penetration testing. Outcomes reported in the implementation notes include consolidated monitoring into a single SolarWinds platform, improved IAAS resiliency through SD-WAN, and reduced costs from the on-premises recovery posture, with ongoing maintenance and enhancements managed by the Infrastructure and Operations team.
